I grew up in the 70’s “Animal” Surfing era where long hair, Morning of the
Earth, stubby single fins, Panel Vans and MP ruled. Back then Pro –Surfing
didn’t exist. You surfed for fun and when you weren’t riding waves you hanged
all day at North Cronulla beach causing mayhem. I first got into photography in
’73 when my job straight out of school was in a photo laboratory called Group
Colour at Potts Point developing Ektachrome film. I used to regularly see the
work of other photographers like Frank Pithers who worked for Tracks and got
inspired. My first camera was a Nikkormat with a 300mm lens and a short time
later a Nikonos 2. From the very beginning I wanted to be a surf photographer.
At my local breaks I began shooting Shark Island and Cronulla Point two of the
heaviest tubing barrels in Australia. After photographing the Island from the
water for the first time I was mesmerised by the raw power and warping beauty
and well and truly hooked. The wave was insane and still is today.

Throughout the rest of the 70’s I shot for fun and treated it more like a
hobby as I was still a keen surfer myself. It wasn’t till the 80’s that I
decided to take it further. My first photo was published in Tracks in ’81 an
Island barrel of the late Geoff Solness and they even credited it wrong. I
didn’t care I was stoked and became super keen for more. In the coming years I
became a contributing photographer for Tracks, Surfing Life, Waves, Lineup,
Surfing Magazine, Westside, Deep, Underground Surf and numerous other mags
around the world. In the mid 80’s I was senior photographer for the skateboard
magazine called Slam. I’ve always been attracted to the darker side of the
sport, the anti heroes and outrageous characters which makes surfing so unique.
That’s why the site is called Animals, Outcasts and Freaks.

It was also in the early 80’s that I worked as a beach marshal on all the pro
comps in Sydney at the time like the Coke, Beaurepaires, Straight Talk, IMB and
got an inside view of Pro Surfing. My first influences were Cronulla
photographers Dave Shaw, Greg Button and Steve Core. I also admired the early
water angles of Peter Crawford and Hawaii’s Don King. Along with my son Craig
whose work will also feature on the site together we produced a bunch of surf
videos in the 90’s that we will show clips from. Surf photography allowed me to
see and film parts of the world I would not have normally seen.

After 4 decades of shooting I have a sizable collection of images in my
portfolio to show and share. I also have a large collection of surfing
memorabilia and magazines ranging from the 60’s, which I also want to feature
some of the more weird and unusual people on the site. Surfing and photography
have given me a lot of pleasure over the years and I hope you enjoy the
flashbacks and walk down memory lane as much as I do.

Mollymook Classic 2013

Picture

Mollymook Longboarders

The 2013 Mollymook Longboarders Charity Classic was held over the weekend of 10/11 August in glorious early spring type weather, with a mostly off-shore wind, with a mixture of fair to good waves.

The contest was surfed both days at Mollymook Reef, with small inconsistent 2-4 foot waves that were adversely affected by an incoming tide that peaked mid-morning both days.

Added to the mix was a fairly ferocious shore break that saw some spectacular crashes from surfers attempting to wring as much out of the waves as possible, and perhaps step off their boards onto the beach (which some did but most didn’t).

Mollymook Reef positions spectators close to the action and there was applause and hooting for the best rides and best wipe-outs that were obviously well received and acknowledged by the surfers involved.

Saturday got underway as usual with the Open 8ft division in perhaps the best conditions of the contest, but still far from optimum for the shorter boards.

But no surprises when regular finalists Christian Pimm, Ray Lawrence, Rob Couriel, Rhys Williams and Matty Cook all progressed to the semis with impressive surfing that included almost the full range of possible manoeuvres.

There was some great riding in the heats of the other six divisions, with perhaps the Open 9 foot and the Old Mal being the stand-outs.

In the Open 9 foot, Ray Lawrence, Christian Pimm and Matty Cook again made the conditions look much better than they were with powerful surfing at both ends of their boards.

Junior Declan Wyton came second to Christian Pimm in his heat with some neat footwork and looked to be possibly the dark horse of the division.

The Old Mal division saw Gerringong junior, Fred Stovin-Bradford surf at a level well beyond his years.

Ray Lawrence also surfed in this division on an immaculate looking Wallace board that he rode like his usual 9 footer with considerable tip-time and powerful turns.

As in recent years, the Over 48 division was the biggest with 28 competitors, and saw locals Phil Jirsa, Greg Furmage, and Ross Tomsen win their round 1 heats.

The Over 58 division was well supported with 15 surfers, of whom 4 were over 65; all absolute legends.

Ken Gray and Mike Greentree who resemble that description both won their heats with a bit of style.

In the Juniors, Declan Wyton and Fred Stovin-Bradford clearly won their heats and impressed with their obvious grommet enthusiasm to give anything a go.

The Over 38 division was the smallest of the age divisions, but was keenly contested with Dean Cristallo, Jason Skinner, Rob Couriel and Jack Daniels (appearing on behalf of sponsor Jim Beam) the pick of the crew in the heats.

By the end of a long 28 heat Saturday, only the semi-finalists in the Over 48s remained to be determined.

Sunday morning arrived with what seemed to most to be a deterioration in wave conditions at Molly Reef; however, on the low tide there were still contestable waves to be had, and the decision was made to continue there.

As the tide rose, the best bank moved a little way north of Saturday’s contest area and continued to provide reasonably contestable waves for the rest of the contest, particularly for most of the finals, with again a crunching shore-break.

Despite the move, which included shifting the judges, the action was still easily viewed from the grass at the Reef, and most of the crew preferred to watch from there in the more sociable conditions.

The remaining Over 48 heats were completed first-up in variable conditions that provided most riders with at least five waves, but needed more careful wave selection than Saturday conditions.

Locals Phil Jirsa, Greg Furmage, and Rob Maher all won their heats to progress to the semis.

The first semis were the Open 8 foot, that saw the same culprits from the heats progress to the final, joined by George Haskas who edged out Dean Cristallo who couldn’t find the waves to suit his powerful style. In the Over 58 semis, locals dominated, with Laurie Andrew, Mike Greentree, Greg Furmage, and Nic de Jong progressing to the final along with visitors, but regular competitors, Ken Gray and David Pimm.

The standard again lifted in the Open 9foot semis, with Declan Wyton winning his heat with two brazen landed 360 manoeuvres, from Matty Cook.

In the other heat, Christian Pimm continued in fine style with near vertical turns and landed reos, and was a clear winner from Tom Leach.

The surprise was the failure of Ray Lawrence to progress, missing his first Mollymook 9 foot final in years.

Regrettably an interference call saw Steve Rutten miss out on a final berth in the Over 48s, but other locals, Neale Ashby, Rob Maher, Greg Furmage, and Rod Dale (well he’s almost a local) progressed along with George Haskas into his second final.

The Finals heats began with the Juniors and was a battle between Fred Stovin-Bradford and Declan Wyton, with Fred just edging out Declan.

Both showed nimble footwork that had many older hands in awe.

In the Over 58s, Ken Gray and Mike Greentree ran out of steam and couldn’t reproduce their earlier form, and Greg Furmage who was as usual very patient, had the win over David Pimm (the second oldest competitor).

Ray Lawrence had some compensation from missing the Open 9 foot final by being the clear winner of the Old Mal final with traditional style, from Bryce Heaps, who hadn’t ridden an Old Mal before the contest.

The heavier board seemed to suit Ray’s style.

Rhys Williams who finished fourth produced a great coffin ride, whilst Chris Brown easily won the best shore-break wipe-out.

In the Open 8 foot final, Matty Cook took the early lead, with some long nose rides, but Christian Pimm overtook him with his final wave that again saw some near vertical turns and landed reos in the shore break.

Ray Lawrence again couldn’t find the waves to suit his powerful riding style, and finished third.

George Haskas, changed his board quickly after the 8 foot final to have a win over Tim Reilly in the Over 48 final.

The contest between the four locals for the minor placings was won by Rob Maher.

In the Over 38 final Dean Cristallo needed a 7+ score on his last wave to overtake Jack Daniels, but could only manage 6s, and so finished second.

The Open 9 foot final was the final event, and was worth waiting for.

Often the conditions deteriorate for the finals, but although there was an onshore sea breeze, there were plenty of waves of good size and shape to sort out the pecking order.

As with the 8 foot final, Christian Pimm and Matty Cook were the stand-out riders and again produced an almost master class for the spectators.

Matty again got off to the best start only to be pipped by Christian’s last wave score.

Tom leach finished third and on the day couldn’t match their standard; but it was one place better than 2012.

Declan Wyton maybe lost a bit of focus in this final and didn’t reproduce his semi-final form.

The food tent was, as usual, the social hub and was marvellously run by Julie Sicco, with assistance from Sue Maris and Michell Morrisey.

Jim Sourry was a deft hand at the barbecue on both days.

Thanks to all club members, under the direction of president Cazza, who set up and cleaned up both days.

The music was again a major ingredient in the vibe and thanks to Laurie Andrew for his DJing.

The only complaint was about the classical selection on Sunday morning, but was made by a lover of “Duelling Banjos” type music.

Laurie was also the MC at the presentation and kept all amused with his insights.

Thanks to the following sponsors: Cronulla Car Sales; Keith Purvis Podiatry; and, Deering Street Printers.

Special thanks to Kent Saunders and Southern Man Surf Shop Ulladulla for organising the bountiful competitor prize pool that included items from: Rip Curl; Billabong; Balin; Creatures of Leisure; Boost Mobile; Dragon; O’neill; Arnette; Rusty; Quiksilver; Nixon; Sea Cured; Xcel; Dakine; Peak; and, Volcom.

Lewis Art and Design produced the contest T-shirts.

The proceeds from the 2013 contest will be donated to local charities, and community groups and services.

CRONULLA Sharks Boardriders have wound up their 2012 season with some
impressive results, including a fourth place in the NSW Open Surftag finals,
12th in the national final and fifth in the Gromtag.

The club championship has also been announced with Jordan Widenstrom taking
out the open title.

Division champions include Jay Brown (cadet boys), Paris Whittaker (cadet
girls), Roan O'Sullivan (junior), Rachel Campbell (women) and Cameron Johnston
(masters).

 ■ The race for the Sandshoes Boardriders open championship has taken a late
season turn, with the brotherly frontrunners Jesse and Jarrod Horner both
eliminated in the semi-finals of the November pointscore.
With all four championships up for grabs, and with the surfing world
following every ride on a global webstream,
the Shoes reef kicked in with the best waves of the year for the vital November pointscore.

Reputations were at stake, trophy positions on the line, the pressure
mounting…it was the sought of scenario upon which Hollywood movies are mounted.
The word went out and before long Disney Pictures were ringing for exclusive
rights to every piece of the action!

And why not…the set-up had drama, comedy, family feuds, sunshine and rain,
wave action equal to any Triple Crown showdown, frying sausages, batteries that
refused to work in the loud hailer, men, women, boys and girls staring each
other down, a chopper filming overhead, dancing dolphins in the line-up…it was a
script writer’s dream.

And then to top it off, three sets of brothers were in the firing line to
make for one of the best finishes to a competitive season on record.

But as there is not enough space to tell all that went on on this fateful
Shoes day, so let’s cut to the chase.

The shock result opened up the way for Matty Cook to grab first place and
surge back into contention for the trophy.

"Cookie" was on fire throughout the event, impressing with long floaters and
the odd head-dip to get the better of Rhys Moffat, elder brother Joel, Tyler
Barnes, Cam Timewell and Jacob Boylan in barnstorming waves.

Brothers Harrison and Nathan Martin also went ride for ride in the Junior
final, with Harrison the elder getting home by a point, with Jeff Felice third
and Nathan Hatheier fourth.

The SuperGroms title is also on a knife-edge, with reigning champ Dion Earle
crashing through for a win over fellow contenders Lachlan Hickey, Shannon
Hatheier and Hans Boerma.

■ Paris Whittaker and Jay Brown both placed third in their respective age
division finals at the Wahu Surfer Groms event held at Dee Why.

Samantha Dewhurst has been awarded the senior girls surfing champion at
Cronulla High School for 2012.

Born into a surfing dynasty Ben McTavish picked up the planer at a very early age. Starting out at PCB in Ballina with Bob, Ben started out sanding fins, and spraying boards in order to get a foot in the door.

His design based mind soon had him in the shaping bay, learning from one of the worlds best. Ben shaped his first shortboard at the age of 15, and soon moved on to hand finishing a lot of Bob’s customs. Ben started his own successful shortboard label in ’93, and still shapes and surfs almost every day. Ben also operates our state-of-the-art APS300 shaping machine.

Ben is also a keen petrol-head, having owned and restored a string of Mopars. When he’s not in the surf you can catch Ben in his back-yard garage, restoring another classic.

Roxburgh takes Evans Head Malibu Classic Title

Picture
THE 2012 Evans Head Malibu Classic has been surfed and won with the premier event, the Bowlo Opens 9 foot division being taken out by Evans Head local Ruben Roxburgh.

Contested is clean small waves, the talented field of surfers entertained a large crowd at the event on the long weekend with a combination of attacking, progressive manoeuvres.

Jared Neal was competing for his fourth straight title in the event and showed the field why he's ranked as one of the top longboard surfers in the world.

He fell just short of another title with a very respectable second place finish.

New to this year was the "loggers" division. Contest organisers were overwhelmed by the number of entrants and had to increase the number of heats to accommodate them all.

The final of the Bennett Surfboards Loggers division was a wonderful display of technical noseriding and old school flair.

For the hundreds of onlookers on the beach, it was a great spectacle.

Brett Caller was the standout surfer in a field of incredible surfing talent from all over NSW which included Jack Lynch, Isaac Fields, Matt Aldridge, Nick Farago and Marlin Guihot.

Isabelle Braly from Byron Bay is one of the most stylish surfers in the country and she combined her graceful manoeuvres with some critical noseriding to win the Open Women's division.

RESULTS

Evans Head Bowlo 9' Open: Ruben Roxburgh (Evans Head), 2 Jared Neal (Woolgoolga), 3 Scott Channon (Lennox Head), 4 Clinton Guest (Gold Coast), 5 Matt Cook (Cronulla), 6 Matt Aldridge (Tweed Heads).

Bennett Surfboards Logs: 1 Brett Caller (Coffs Harbour), 2 Matt Aldridge (Tweed Heads),3 Marlin Guihot (Newcastle), 4 Isaac Fields (Evans Head), 5 Jack Lynch (Byron Bay), 6 Nick Farago (Wollongong).

Wild waves for Mollymook Classic

Picture
After the wind whipped up on Friday, Mollymook Longboarders Charity Classic
organisers were left crossing their fingers.

But when the sun came up on Saturday morning, surfers were ready to hit the
waves, despite the weather leaving the ocean a little wild.

Held across two days, the annual Mollymook Longboarders Charity Classic has
been hailed another great success.

A full-schedule of contestants took to the water to challenge for the top
spots across a range of divisions.

In the Open 9 Foot division it was Christian Pimm who came out on top, ahead
of Matty Cook, Matt Bryant, Tom Leach, Ray Lawrence, Rhys Williams.

In the Open 8 Foot final, Christian Pimm, Matty Cook, Rhys Williams, Tom
Leach and Matt Bryant all impressed but it was Ray Lawrence who took the
top spot.

The Over 38 division saw Ray Blackman take the title, beating finalists Jason
Skinner, Alex Hay-McKenzie, Keith Purvis, Robert Couriel and Simon Cox.

The Over 48 division was another tough fought battle between Ray Blackman,
Alex Kiss, Steve Rutten, Jim Sourry, Rob Maher and Neale Ashby with Ray again
showing his winning ways.

In the Over 58s Neil Frederiksen took down Laurie Andrew, David Pimm, Jon
Lavers, Nick de Jong and Mike Greentree, while in the Old Mal division Losal
managed to out surf Rhys Williams, Fred Stovin-Bradford, Matt Maris, Chris Brown
and Troy Moorehouse.

In the women’s division it was a tough battle between April Charles, Lara
Murphy, Ashley Rutten and Bernadette Murphy with April named the victor.

The Juniors showed they have all the skills they need with Caellum Purvis
beating out Fred Stovin-Bradford, Jared Eason and Josh Couriel to the top
spot.

Jensen and Young Both Claim Back-To-Back Whalebone Classic Titles

Picture
Taylor Jensen (CA/USA) undefeated on the 2012 ASP
Australasian LQS.

COTTESLOE, WA/AUS (Sunday, July 15, 2012)
–
Taylor Jensen (CA/USA) and Georgia Young (WA/AUS) both claimed
victory at the ASP 3-Star “Be Kind, Be Calm, Keep Smiling” Whalebone Classic for
the second year in a row. The Whalebone Classic, the third and final stop on
this year’s ASP Australasian Longboard Qualifying Series (LQS), wrapped up today
at Cottesloe Beach WA in 2 foot (1 meter) surf.

Reigning ASP World Longboard Champion Jensen made history today after not
only winning the Whalebone Classic for the second year in a row, but also making
a clean sweep of the 2012 ASP Australasian LQS, winning all three events. It was
Jensen’s powerful carves and traditional style that saw him finish the 2012 series
undefeated.

“The conditions were tough out there today,” Jensen said. “With the wind and
tide anyone could have taken the win in that Final. I just got lucky I had those two
waves at the start of the heat, but I will take the win. It feels great to win
here again, I love this event.”

Harley Ingleby (AUS), 2009 ASP World Longboard Champion recovered from a slow
start to the Final to claim 2nd position ahead of Nic Jones (AUS) and Nick
Farago (AUS) who finished 3rd and 4th respectively.

The women’s Final was a back and forth battle between the defending champion
Young and the Hawaiian Miku Uemura (HAW). Young opened her account with a 6.50 (out of a possible 10) before
Uemura replied with an impressive 7.50. Young then backed up with a 5.75 leaving
Uemura needing only a 4.75 wave to take the win. The conditions deteriorated and
the wave never eventuated for Uemura, giving Young back-to-back Whalebone
Classic titles.

“I can’t believe I won this event two years in a row,” Young said. “With all
the international competitors in the event this year this has to be the hardest
women’s field I have encountered at the Whalebone.”

New Zealand’s Wini Paul (NZL) and Kirsty Webster (AUS) finished 3rd and 4th
after advancing to the Final with some impressive surfing throughout the
event.

A minutes silence was held for 24 year old shark attack victim Ben Linden who
was killed surfing  at Wedge Island yesterday.

The Perfect 'North' Haven for Longboarders at the NSW Titles

 Thursday, 21 June 2012

PORT MACQUARIE (Thursday 21st June 2012): A nice right-hander on the river
mouth at North Haven was the venue as NSW best open men and women opened up
their campaign, at the Australian Skin Cancer Clinics NSW Longboard State
Titles.

With stacked Open men’s heats on the board competition was tough. Ex ASP
World tour surfers, past Australian Champions and defending NSW champions all
vying for the prestigious titles on offer at the 6 day event.

Local surfer Darren O’Rafferty (Bonny Hills), who is no stranger to
competition surfing, competing on the World Tour as a short board surfer and
growing up riding a longboard around the Port Macquarie area won his round 1
heat in one of the toughest heats of the day.

“I’ve watched all of the heats in the opens and the surfing is a really high
standard this year, so I’m stoked just to get though one heat given the talent
out there.”, said O’Rafferty.

Competing against three top longboarders in his opening heat; Corrimal surfer
Nick Fargo, Craig Davies (Bondi) and Matty Cook (Cronulla), was a spectacle for
onlookers in the early morning pristine winter conditions.

“It was great this morning when we rocked up it was pretty solid, as the tide
filled in and it was offshore, the waves were awesome, all the guys were pretty
stoked with the move down here to North Haven”

“During our heat the wind just started to come up, but there was still some
really nice waves we could ride all the way through and get the connection on
the inside, and its still some great waves out there this afternoon”, said
O’Rafferty who moved through to round 2 with Nick Fargo who placed 2nd.

Cook and Davies surfed again in the requalifying round to get through to
round 2. Marlin Guihot (Anna Bay) and William Crowe (Collaroy) were up against
Cook and Guihot was knocked out in yet another close heat spectators were
whitnessing in the opening men’s division.

Also doing well in the opening men’s was Lennox Head surfer Ben Dickens, his
big lay backs and nose rides propelled him to round 2 where he comes up against
O’Rafferty and Gosford surfer Mitch Fraser tomorrow.

Defending open men’s champion Jared Neal (Coffs Harbour) was on fire and
judges awarded him the VB Slab of the day, for a combined heat total of 17.5
(out of a possible 20). His 8.83 ride consisted of two big open face carves on
the early 4 foot waves and finished with a nice floater to take first place in
his round 1 heat.

Making her mark for the second year running was defending open women’s
champion Erin Dark (Gerringong). In the last 20 seconds of her heat against
Bondi Surfer Claire Norman, Dark took the lead on the hooter and won the first
heat of the open women’s.

Dark moves to round 2 with Norman, Scotts Head Surfer Kirra Perry and Roisin
Carolan (Binna Burra)., along with Jennifer Arnold (Port Macquarie) and Debbie
Allan (Canton Beach).

Finishing the day on top was the Grand Kahunas (over 60's), Danny Bond from
Blue Bay got the highest wave of the day; a 9.67 ride to win 1st place in the
over 60's semi, with local Peter Hudson coming in a close second.

Tomorrow the youngest competitors take charge in the early morning with the
under 18 girls and boys first up, followed by under 16's and open men and women
move into round 2. Over 35 women will take to the waves again and will be one
step closer to finding a state champion.

Layne Beachley Wins the NSW VB Surfmasters Title presented by Mobys.

 Thursday, 14 June 2012

The highly anticipated swell hitting the east coast of NSW made for perfect
conditions, as the VB Surfmasters NSW State Titles crowned 4 champions at Seal
Rocks, Layne Beachley took the Women's state title in the solid 6 foot swell in
the Great Lakes.

"It's so beautiful here, the surf is perfect, I feel like I have had a holiday", said Beachley after winning the Over 35 Women's NSW title at Seal
Rocks today.

It's the first time Layne and many of the competitors have surfed on this
pristine break in the Great Lakes. Beachley had a great time surfing with NSW
best over 35 women and was stoked to watch the Masters have a crack at the
title.

"It really inspires me watching the olders guys, they don't give up. Seeing
the over 55's still ripping on short boards inspires me to keep it real and stay
on short boards as long as I can".

"Yvonne came up to me and said wow its not every day you get to surf and be
coached by a world champion, so that's great, it was great surfing with the
ladies", said Layne after calling Yvonne onto a wave that cemented her spot in
the final.

Turning up with his usual array of surf boards in hand, Matty Cook
(Cronulla), had his second shot at the Single Fin and Alaia state Title. After
making it through to the Australian Titles in 2011 Cook was up against fellow
Sutherland Shire charger Michael Crisp (Cronulla) in the Alaia, with a landslide
win.

"I've been to the area a few times but never have I seen waves break along
this headland before", said Cook of the conditions at Seal Rocks in the Great
Lakes.

Cooking up the highest heat score of the day, 18 out of a possible 20, Matty
relishes in surfing on the traditional Hawaiian surfboard known as the
Alaia.

"There's no fins so its hard to control, your going so fast sliding along the
face rather than carving big turns, you're really just flowing with the speed of
the wave, Its just a really good feeling", said Cook who was crowned on the
beach as the 2012 NSW Alaia champion.

Meeting again in the Single Fin final after round 1 brought some big scores,
Cook and Crisp had strong competition ahead on the retro boards. His opening lay
back wowed the crowd but wasn't enough to beat Port Macquarie surfer Wayne
Hudson who cemented an opening 8.83 and took the Single fin NSW crown.

The over 55 Men's was a cracking division to watch with competitors
travelling from all edges of the NSW Coastline to compete. The early divisions
netted big scores, Brad Stewart from Bilgola Plateau placed an early 15.17 in
the first round and division winner Mark Phelan took the title with 15.84 in the
final.

Major sponsor VB awarded Matty Cook with a case of cold beer, he rode the
wave of the day and was an overall performer in the Alaia and Single Fin
divisions. Layne Becahley also took home a case of VB as the winner in the
Women's division.

All winners received a pair of Vestal sunnies and a sweet Vestal watch was
awarded to Beachley as the winner of the over 35 women's.

The event will also act as the qualifier for Team NSW for the 2012 Australian
Surfmasters Titles which are set to be held during the Australian Surf Festival
from 11-25 August 2012.

Mobys Beachside Retreat will host a VB BBQ dinner for competitors and
families, from 6:00pm on Friday 15th June. 2011 event highlights will be played
along with a nostalgic surf film.

Staff choose to stay at Mobys Beachside Retreat who are offering great
competitor deals, please call 1800 655 322 for reservations or visit

host of great dining entertainment and activity choices. For more info on

Ian Macca McDonald has been surfing the Cronulla stretch for a long time and is a well respected surfer and surf photographer. Macca prefers to surf early and is amongst the true dawn patrollers. I think his favourite wave would have to be Sandshoes. Ian has a photo gallery you can look at by clicking on this link below. If you surf in Cronulla then chances are you will find a picture of yourself somewhere amongst the thousands of photos he has captured over the years. Below are a few quality photographs he got of Joel Moffet and I from Monday morning the 5th of june.

Life is swell

Picture
Hello,
Thought I'd share with you some photos i took of the far north coast.

I waited till midnight easter monday for the crowds to leave and the loss of double demeret points to end. Filled the car with all sorts of boards, long, short, finless and followed the swell up the coast.
Here i found long uncrowded point breaks, warm water and sunshine. Was lucky enough to see some awesome bands play and party with the best of them in Byron Bay as well.

Now as the car is still packed i have decided to go south from Cronulla. Just waiting for the weather to clear a little. Will leave early Thursday i think.
If you would like to climb aboard, give us a call on 0400 658 785. The forecast for waves looks good :)

Taylor Jensen and Chelsea Williams Reign at Australian Longboard Surfing Open March 26, 2012 | ASP International

Picture

KINGSCLIFF/NSW/AUS (Sunday, 25th March, 2012) – Current World Champion Taylor Jensen (California, USA) has held off a late charge by former World Champion Harley Ingleby (Emerald Waters, NSW) to win the Australian Longboard Surfing Open presented by Surftech.

The prestigious event at Kingscliff in northern NSW featured both men’s and women’s Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Longboard Qualifying Series (LQS) divisions with $20,000 total prize money.

In shifting 1-2ft (.5 metre) swell, Jensen took the men’s final on the back of two early high scores while in the women’s final local favourite Chelsea Williams (Tweed Heads, NSW) had the highest single wave score of the heat to edge out Jennifer Smith (California, USA) after both surfers finished on 13.87.

In tricky conditions on the incoming tide, Jensen (16.26) locked in an early 7.43 and backed it up with the final’s highest single wave score of 8.83 with 15 minutes remaining to finish ahead of Ingleby (15.04), Nic Jones (Buderim, QLD, 10.10) and Dane Wilson (Coolum Beach, QLD, 9.27). Ingleby scored an 8.27 with 10 minutes remaining, but it wasn’t enough with Jensen holding on for the win.

“You had to go for anything that looked like it might wall up and that first one walled up on the inside for me and halfway through the heat I could see that second one would wall up so I was happy to get those two in,” Jensen said.

“But I wanted to put a better heat score together to feel a bit safer as Harley has come back against me before late in the heat and locked in a winning score so I would have liked a better back-up.

“I was confident nothing was going to come through and offer the mid-8 score he needed on the inside so I sat out back to make sure if the bomb came through I had it protected.”

In the women’s LQS division, the lead changed seven times with each surfer taking top spot at some stage but it was Williams who snuck home on the back of a 9.17 midway through the heat to finish ahead of Smith, Crystal Dzigas (HAW, 12.50) and Candice Appleby (HAW, 9.27).

In a tense finish, Smith needed a 7.21 to take the title and came desperately close scoring 7.20 to level the scores with Williams on 13.87 forcing a count-back. Williams took the title courtesy of her 9.17 to Smith’s best single wave score of 7.20.

“I was pretty worried, it took me a while to get my first one as I was always in the wrong spot and all the girls would get a wave and then I’d just be waiting and nothing would come,” Williams said.

“I definitely needed that first big score. It’s so hard out there. You can’t really see from the beach but it’s really washy and the bumps are everywhere. I didn’t realise it was as close as it was in the end.”

Finals in all divisions were held today including the Illusions Noosa SUP Pro with Beau Nixon (Tweed Heads, NSW) dominating with an 18.70 to easily account for Jackson Close (Tweed Heads, NSW,13.53), Geoff Breen (Sunshine Coast, QLD, 13.24) and Dane Wilson (Coolum, QLD, 9.84). Nixon exploded out of the blocks to quickly put the final beyond doubt scoring an 8.83 and a 9.87.

Sandshoes On A Roll at 2011 King Of The Beach

Picture
The chips were down with a range of leading riders unavailable to compete,
but the Shoes brigade rose to the occasion to log an historic high placing at
the annual King of the Beach.

The tournament that sorts out the wheat from the chaff along the Cronulla
coastline didn’t disappoint with great enthusiasm, a mix of poor to good waves,
dramas and a nail biting finish.

Under the stewardship of Matt Mulder and Jack Horner, the Shoes squad surfed way above itself to post a third position in the elimination rounds to make the final showdown for the first time
in the contest’s history.

Here’s a blow-by-blow description from Jack Horner:
“1st heat, 5 opens and girl surfer. Who do we nominate as our power surfer?
Let’s go Jack Irvin. There’s a few good lefts out there and he has a great
bank-hand snap. Could be big points there. Matt’s recruit, Kylie Jones – on her
lunch break from Triple Bull – surfs great and catches her waves quickly with
solid scores.

“Things are looking better. Next in is Jacob Boylan. Doesn’t surf the beach
much but exceeds expectations and puts two solid rides together.

“Now into the fray are the Cook brothers…a triple treat or so-so? Benny is
far from disgraced, but time is our enemy; we need the bonus points. Matty gets
two good ones and surfs unreal hitting backhand snap after another. Things are
looking brighter but what will we get from Danny? There are good lefts out there
and it could suit the shoes alley specialist. Not to disappoint, Danny hooked
into a couple of lefts and tared them apart. Satisfying end to round 1.

“Round 2. Most teams throw out their under14 surfers first. Not Shoes, We put
John Tuck in first, nominate him as the power surfer and intimidate the other
clubs groms! Tuck latched onto a couple of Alley lefts and snapped, slashed and
milked the B’Jesus out of em. Looking better now.

“Super grom, Nathan Martin, goes into the fray, showing what a surfer of the future he is by nailing a couple of big turns and handing the batten off to Nathan Hatheier who after a slow start finished strong to keep the momentum going.

“Matt Cook was next in, riding a board that was as thick as the 1980’s McCoys. But somehow made some nice turns on two waves and got the job done quick
to give Reece Moffatt enough time. Reece struggled but eventually got two decent ones and that left Cabbo about 3 minutes to finish in time.

“It looked like Mission Impossible for Cabs, but not to worry, fortunately he
caught one wave and picked up vital points.

“While the tallying of points waqs in progress, Reece surfed in the Expresion
Session and was showing good form. Tuck was at the officials tent making sure
the Christians weren’t going to pull a swiftie.

“Finally the official call came through, Shoes Third! Well in front of Garie,
the Christians and The Point. We were all going off. Then Mulder comes back and
says the teams below us are blowing up. Official results are on hold. After a 10
minute delay our dreams are confirmed. Shoes into the finals for the first
time.

“Tuck’s comment: “We are no longer a feeder club; we’re in the big league
now”.

“Finals time now. Let’s pick form surfers. Tuck, Reece, Mulder, Danny and
Irvin. Reece leads us off with a solid effort. Tuck consistent as ever picks
off two good waves and we are matching Garie. Mulder is in next and in good form
and the skipper is the power surfer. He leads by example and puts in a polished
effort.

“Danny Cook next and goes to town on the lefts. Everyone is frothing on
Danny’s efforts and there are high 5′s aplenty. Irvin is last and the crucial
bonus points are on offer. He catches two quick one and secures the bonus
points.

“Is it enough to beat Garie and finish 3rd. Either way all the Shoes boys are stoked to have made the final and have a dig.

“We finished 4th but that gives us the goal to get that 3rd spot next year!”

Big congratulations to all the team and management. All members should feel stoked and proud. The Reef rules!

2011 Central Coast Open, Avoca Beach

Picture
It was a weird sensation on the first day of the Central Coast Open as a heavy
fog covered Avoca Beach. First in the water with the best waves of the day were the Opens whose coloured rashies were hard to distinguish through the fog. The wind in the afternoon
cleared both the fog and the waves. All through the afternoon the older
divisions struggled in the small waves exept Dave Hayes who sat wider than his
other competitors and got some fast righthanders all the way through to the
beach.
The fog reappeared the second day. The swell had grown another few feet overnight
and looked like it would produce some solid waves. Next to the competition area
Damian Farago was pushing some airs on his nine-footer. A standout in the Old Mals was Marlin Gulhot who rode his old board with stylish turns and long noserides. As the day went on a strong offshore wind came up and blew away the fog as well as the food tent. The wind reached its peak in time for the Open final and competitors were being pushed off the back of waves.

Bylsey's Surf Shop

Picture
Bylsey as seen in Swellnet today!

'In glorious faux-boho Byron Bay, at 69 Shirley St (yes, you read that right) another wonderful symbiotic friendship and cultural phenomena is flourishing in the full-bodied Autumn sunshine. I speak, of course, of 1991 ASP Rookie of the Year Jeremy Byles' surf shop and the employment opportunity he has extended to his old friend Shane Herring. At any time of the day Bylesy is selling boardshorts and surfboards and Shane is in the back rooms fixing dings.'
Steve Shearer
http://www.swellnet.com.au/news/2223-the-outsider-prologue-tell-me-why

'Back in my day a trip to the surfshop meant my dad sometimes bringing in a 6pack and taking an hour or so, whilst we kids checked out every little item, especially old boards... now its like going into a retail store and you have salespeople attacking you and hot 18yo girls and trendy 18yo boys who know more about fashion than layin down some rail (not to mention the hundreds of 6'1" JS ultralight $750 surfboards)... Bylseys shop is keepin the soul in byron (and i guess if Herro gives some advice about the pitfalls of life thats all good). I've watched the demise of surfshops into fashion shops and its sad'

Small Town Evan

Picture
Spontaneous getaways are the ones that refresh the constants.

An hour down the road from hometown Byron is Evans Head. A laid-back coastal down of simple pleasures. Surf. Beer. Fish & Chips. Paul McNeil, Tim Manton and Myself thought the long weekend was a perfect time to venture to see ‘Small Town Evan”, and catch up with our mate Matthew Cook, who was surfing in the Evans Head Malibu Event.

It was a few hours of fun. Boys just doing boy things. Sausage Sanga’s, bro in a can, bowling club beers, surfing closeouts, chips with fish, and mucho laughter. We drove home fulfilled. Enjoy the pics.

Matthew Cook or “Cookie” as we call him finished 4th in the Open Longboards and 3rd in the Retro. Good stuff.

It’s always good to getaway. Look forward to the next adventure to see “Small Town Evan”.

Classic went down to last ride

Picture
Jared Neal was in top form at the Evans Head Malibu Classic.
The Coffs Coast Advocate
Josh Spasaro | 6th October 2011

COFFS HARBOUR'S Jared Neal claimed a remarkable third straight retro-style fin victory at the Evans Head Malibu Classic.

Capping his dominance at the event, Neal also won the open nine foot division for the second time in three years.

Opposing surfers Matty Cook and Matt Aldridge challenged Neal right up until his final ride in the nine foot division.

"I thought it was really close even at the end of the final, but then I got a good wave with my last ride and I thought to myself 'that one was a keeper'," Neal, 28, said.

"Every time someone caught a wave you'd see a big turn or a long noseride.

"Cook and Aldridge were right up there and I thought the competition in the final was outstanding."

Neal excelled in Monday's huge swell, which was bigger than what he experienced the day before.

"The waves were bigger and that's how I prefer it," he said.

"Some of the other guys preferred the smaller waves but I've grown up surfing big waves at Coffs."

Neal has enjoyed coming up to the Evans Head Malibu Classic for the best part of a decade.

"I've come up to the last six or seven Evans titles," he said.

"I always see it as a big event on the surfing calendar. It's one of my favourite competitions."

Neal said he was not fazed about switching between his retro-style fin and nine foot boards.

"I've surfed different boards for a long time, whether that is a short, long, twin or single fin. I always loved doing it as I grew up riding shortboards, then took up longboard riding when I was 16."

It has been a big year for Neal.

He won the New South Wales longboard title in June, before finishing ninth at the World Longboarding Championships in Sri Lanka.

"Getting ninth was a good result but I want to do better at the next world championship event in Italy in four weeks' time," he said.

"I'm a carpenter by trade, so I have to work to fund my travels, but Billy Tolhust is a board shaper in Coffs and he's helped me with some sponsorship."

Nothing tunes up your style quicker than a solid week of single-fin surfing, where the end game revolves around finding, and not straying too far from, the power source. Long live the single-fin.

A classic design that for a period of time was considered obsolete by the mainstream surf industry has been finding its way back into our quivers. For many pre-’80s generation surfers, it is a design that never left our hearts—an old flame. For a whole new generation of surfers, the mid- to late-’70s era single-fin is a voluptuous cougar—easy to get, but not easy to ride. The single-fin, newcomers are finding out, is fickle and demanding.

Despite the upgrades, paddle out on a single-fin for the first time in a long time and reality sets in. They simply don’t perform in the same manner as the multitude of multi-finned boards that took her place. That’s not a bad thing; in fact, I’m here to tell you that that is exactly why a good single-fin is so special.

The power of a good single-fin is in its ability to temper an overzealous style and to reacquaint you with pocket of the wave. So much of our contemporary surfing on multi-finned boards takes place away from the power of the wave. We race out to the flats for our bottom turn or we run out on the shoulder for our cutback or we constantly look to take our board up high into the lip. Rarely do we stall mid-face and feel the trim of the rail line.

The single-fin demands that you get to know the wave before having your way with her. You must sit, in the pocket, in the juice, in the power, and wait for her to give you the speed. And this mid-face, power pocket-surfing allows your surfing to become more stylized. You are forced to work with the wave rather than against it. You must slow down, find the juice, and squeeze it and this is why a single-fin is good for your style. Ridden properly, single-fins make the wave give you the speed, not the board. And this, in small doses, does wonders for your surfing. When you do get back onto your multi-finned board, it is on.

Surf Report with John Veage
07 Sep, 2011 11:15 AM

Bobby Brown never lived to see his 21st. In his short life he cast a long shadow over the surfing world. 44 years after he was fatally glassed during a game of pool on a Saturday night in August 1967, his surfing exploits are being remembered at Jackson Surfboards, in a travelling exhibition organised by Andrew McKinnon. Bobby was ranked up there with such luminaries as Midget Farrelly, Nat Young and Peter Drouyn. His short but impressive surfing life featured in movies such as Bob Evans’ 1963 Young Wave Hunters and Paul Witzigs’ 1967 groundbreaking movie, Hot Generation. He was only 17 when he qualified for the first open men’s world titles final in 1964.
This exhibition is on for a week from Saturday, so do yourself a favour and get down to Jacko's where it all began.

The front page pic of Bobby was taken in 1963 by Bob Weeks at the Alley, today’s pic was taken at the same spot.

But back to the surf report, today’s 2ft north east swell is due to hang around into the weekend when WHAM, a new 6-8ft southerly swell is due to hit. The winds should be W/SW so conditions should be EPIC. Now that I have put the mocker on that swell, lets look at today's pics. The 2ft north swell means the Alley or Shoes, there's nothing much in between so take a pick. Today's pics were shot of the pre-dawners making the most of the clean early conditions, I also threw in a pic of TAJ from the New York comp that started today at Long Beach in very average 2-3ft waves, it was the Josh Kerr show putting on an impressive aerial display. The other pics were from the Sharks boardriders comp on the weekend, where Dane Durbin took the win over Dyl Hannah, in better waves than they have in New York. Cheers.

History Created as Barney Quinlan Crowned Australia's first Alaia Champion

Port Maquarie News

Thursday, 25 August 2011

AUSTRALIAN surfing history was created in Port Macqaurie today, at the Australian Surf Festival, with the first ever Alaia champion crowned.
Town Beach provided the ideal arena for the maiden final, pumping out some great conditions for the traditional Hawaiian surfboards fit for a king.
In clean 3ft (1-metre) waves, Barney Quinlan (Bondi, NSW) etched his name in the record books, netting a 15.25 two-wave combined total on the finless wooden boards to beater the 13.95 of Matty Cook, South Cronulla, NSW, Ian Bell (North Haven, NSW),  and Jarrad Davies (Margaret River, WA).
Barney Quinlan who competed in the final on a beautifully carved wooden Alaia, looked in sync with the traditional ancient art of surfing, which is finding it’s roots in the Australian Surfing scene.
“It feels extra special knowing I am the first person to win the Australian Title in the Alaia, I’ve been lucky enough to ride one for a couple of years after a friend of mine helped me shape it”.
“I like to think of it as a combination of Longboard, Body surfing and body boarding, being a surfer that’s surfed a lot of different waves for a few years on the Alaia, it’s great to see the Australian Surf festival open the division and continue to down the track”, said Quinlan.
Alaia surfing continues to grow in Australia and the addition to the 2011 Australian Surf Festival, sparked interest amongst spectators and competitors who whitnessed the historical moment in Australian Surfing history.

Alaia surfers aim to be past masters

Rachel Olding August 24, 2011

Chairman of the board … Cronulla rider Matty Cook will battle the waves in the inaugural Alaia and Longboard divisions at Port Macquarie this week.

Photo: Steven Siewert

THE ancient Hawaiians were onto it and now Australian surfers are rediscovering the art of alaia surfing.
Long, thin, finless and made from wood, alaia surfboards are neither practical nor easy to master. But when international pro Jacob Struth hit the water at Noosa with an alaia board five years ago, a retro revival began.
Fringe and retro styles and surfboards like the alaia have experienced such a surge in popularity in Australia that Surfing NSW's peak event, the Australian Surf Festival, will hold its first Australian Alaia Titles starting today.
'They're really quick, they're very fast on the water and they just glide. Once you get your feet on one, there's no better,'' says Tom Wegener, a Noosa surfer who shapes alaia boards using Paulownia wood grown around Kempsey and Coffs Harbour. ''If you had a really souped-up hovercraft and a car, the alaia would be the hovercraft and your regular board the car.''Matty Cook, a Cronulla rider and shaper of alaia boards, is one of 10 competitors in the inaugural Alaia and Longboard divisions held in Port Macquarie this week. He says the alaia revival is a subtle backlash to the hard core, commercial surfing of the '80s and '90s.
''Everyone was  trying to drive surfing into the next level of aerials and seeing who could do the most radical manoeuvres,'' he said. ''For me, it's more about having fun and that feeling you get rather than trying to be the next Kelly Slater.''
But even world-class surfers have been seduced by finless boards, hailing them a revolution in surfboard design and a near-spiritual surfing experience. Pro surfers Tom Curren, Dave Rastovich and Thomas Campbell are all alaia enthusiasts, attracted by their environmental credentials as much as their primeval qualities.
''The really good surfers want to see how good they are compared to the ancients,'' Mr Wegener said. ''And it's just like learning how to surf all over again. It's an incredible feeling.''
Surfing is having a retrospective moment as the sport reaches its fifth generation in Australia, said Mark Windon, chief executive of Surfing NSW. Surfers are starting to collect memorabilia, blow the dust off surfing music and take to the water on old-style boards. To some, modern surfing with the standard ''thruster'' shortboard has become stale.
''I suppose the sport had to get to 50 or 60 years old before people started looking back,'' Mr Windon said.

Mollymook Longboard Classic 2011

Picture
Golf Course Reef

I Ended up leaving Cronulla at 3:15 last Saturday to make my heat at 7:00 in the Mollmook Longboard Classic at Golf Course Reef, Ulladulla. When the sun came up i was greeted by a most beautiful left hander 3-4ft and an offshore breeze. i was pumped!
Unfortunately i fell of not making it out of the tube on my backhand a few times but still managed to place third and scrape through... just. My second heat that day i nailed with long noserides and placed first, by placing first it allowed me to go straight through to the final which would be held the following day. So it was of to the Mollymook Golf Club to celebrate with a few beers and to watch the footy. Slept in the van that night after sitting round a campfire in golf course reef car park. It was pretty cold but i'd had enough beers that i didn't notice that having an awesome nights sleep and waking up feeling as psyched as ever.

NO WAVES!!!...The incredible waves from Saturday were gone it was dead flat and the competition was moved around to Mollymook Beach. 1-2ft shore dumps.I did my best but ended up with a second place unfortunatley not having the moves to out point Northern Beaches surfer Christian Pimm.

2011 Mollymook Charity Classic

MOLLYMOOK LONGBOARDERS CHARITY CLASSIC 2011

The 2011 Mollymook Longboarders Charity Classic was held over the weekend of 13/14 August. With 63 competitors in eight divisions, numbers were about the same as in 2010. The contest kicked off on Saturday at Golfcourse Reef, but had to shift to Mollymook Beach Reef on Sunday due to a lack of waves at Golfy.  Conditions throughout Saturday were very surfer friendly with shoulder to above head-high waves, light winds, and sunshine all day.  Unfortunately the swell dropped overnight and although at Mollymook Reef there were plenty of contestable waves to be had, the quality was much reduced from Saturday, making wave selection much more critical and introducing an element of luck.  Graham Sorensen was again the contest Head Judge and Steve Pinnington was the official Tallyer; their continued support always adds to the status of the contest  The relaxed atmosphere for which the contest is now well-known prevailed on both days.

Standout surfers in the Saturday heats were: Christian Pimm and local Phil Jirsa in the Open 8ft division; local surfers Phil Jirsa, again, and Brad Karlson in the Over 46 division; local Nick de Jong in the Over 57 division; and locals Losal and Matt Maris in the Old Mal division.  Christian Pimm particularly and Matty Cook from Cronulla in the Open 9ft division put on an almost  master class demonstration of power surfing, with vertical manoeuvres and amazing footwork, which was applauded with hooting from the beach by the many spectators.  Of note was the rivalry of mother Josie Charles and daughter April in the Women’s division, with April giving her mum no quarter.

On Saturday night many of the competitors and their supporters enjoyed the music of local musician Roddy Reason at the Commercial Hotel in Milton.  Roddy generously donated his performance in support of the contest.

The conditions on Sunday were a bit more difficult for the semis and finals.  On the high tide a shore break had to be negotiated for maximum points and there were some great wipe-outs as surfers attempted to push through a close-out section or to kick out   However, the better surfers mostly seemed to be able find the better waves, and there were few surprises in those who made it through to the finals.  The venue at Mollymook Reef places the spectators much closer to the action than Golfy, and in the more difficult conditions there were plenty of opportunities for surfers to hear the spectators hooting their efforts, which included a few barrels and cover-ups and some difficult close-out off-the-lip re-entries.  Once again it was Christian Pimm and Matty Cook who were the standout surfers, with Christian producing some air manoeuvres in both the 8ft and 9ft finals that even had Matty applauding.  Other notable performances came from perennial grommet Johnny Skinner in the 8 footers and in the Over 46 division, Rhys Williams and Lex Evans in the Old Mal division in difficult conditions for the boards, Josh Couriel in the Juniors, and Nick de Jong in the Over 57 division.

After the contest, a surfer’s paddle-out was held at Golfcourse Reef for club member Will Maris who died after a period in hospital following his rescue from the surf on 17 July.  52 surfers and a dog participated in the paddle-out, which was also observed by many on the shore.  It was a fitting and emotional farewell at the break where Will rode his last wave.

Special thanks to Southern Man Surf Shop for support and sponsorship of the contest, to Ken Peek for the Sea Crest longboard he made for the raffle, and to Greg McCarthy for the framed photos that he donated for the raffle.  Prize sponsors included:  Xcel;  Rip Curl;  Peak;  Balin;  Mrs Palmers;  Creatures of Leisure;  Boost Mobile;  Sector 9;  Arnette;  Von Zipper;  Quiksilver; Electric;  Dakine;  Dragon;  Line Art; and, Volcom.  Other sponsors were Deering St Printers and Keith Purvis Podiatry.  Thanks to Geoff Barnett and partner Julie and much appreciation for their catering efforts, and  to the club members, particularly the Maris family, who operated the food tent, which was the socialising hub on both days.  As usual, Laurie Andrew’s carefully selected music created the right ambience throughout the contest.

The proceeds from the 2011 contest will be donated to the Westpac Helicopter Rescue Service, which provided such an incredible service after the rescue of Will Maris.

Taylor Jensen And Dane Pioli Lead Charge At The 14th Whalebone Classic
Saturday, 16th July 2011

Picture

Today saw a gathering of some of the world's best longboarders for the final leg of the ASP Longboard Qualifying Series - The 14th Annual Whalebone Classic at Iso's Reef, Cottesloe Beach. Competitors entertained the crowd as they mixed traditional and modern manoeuvres on their logs.

Six times US Open Champion Taylor Jensen (USA) proved too strong in the opening heat of the Mack Hall Real Estate Open Pro, twice hanging ten in the opening section of the wave before two full rail cutbacks. Jensen then worked the wave all the way too the beach with the highest scoring ride of the day.

Nimble footed Lindsay Small walked the board and raked up some good tip time to finish second with former Whalebone Pro Champion Ben Proudfoot unable to find the right waves finishing third.

Dan Corbett (WA) who released himself from hospital where he was being treated for a broken toe that had become infected, raced to an early lead by sitting on the inside. Corbett had 4 waves before anyone else had notched a score. Justin Redman (WA) surfed strongly on the lefts to make it a 1 - 2 finish ahead of NSW pair, Jared Neal and Kevin Holt.

Current Australian Champion Dane Pioli (NSW) led from start to finish in heat 3 after scoring a great opening ride and backing it up with another crowd pleasing ride as he was paddling back out. Everywhere that Pioli sat waves seemed to appear for him. WA Champion Rahn Goddard worked several left handers all the way to the beach to keep Matty Cook (NSW) at bay with the ever happy Michael Cottier (NSW) 4th.

16 year old Michaela Ross continued her winning form taking out the first heat of the Mack Hall Real Estate Women's Pro from Victorian champion Emma Webb and Rachael Dawe (WA) 3rd. Progressing from heat two was Taylor Jensen's girlfriend Nava Young (NSW) with Georgia Young (WA) second and Lucy Small third. The final heat and it was another travelling competitor Claire Norman (NSW) taking it out from Jade Foster (WA) and Jennypher Sobier (Reunion Island) third.

Event Champions will be crowned when competition resumes tomorrow across a multitude of divisions.

VB NSW Surfmasters Titles 2011, 2 July 2011

Picture
Single fin: Matty Cook, Rob Hazlewood and Ian Bell photo: the lovely Renee Miller
With the wind turning North East on a protected Bombo Beach, conditions looked perfect for the final divisions to be crowned on day four, of the VB NSW Open Surfmasters Titles 2011.

Knowing the enormity of the day's results, competitors were looking at taking home one of the most prestigious trophy's in NSW surfing folklore; not to mention qualification into the Australian Surf Festival to be held in August this year.

The quality line up for the Open Men's final included current WQS surfer Rhys Bombaci from Kiama, along with highly rated Australian surfer Sam Lendrum, Cronulla's Rory Jenkins and Pro Junior surfer Shane Holmes.

With Catherine Hills Bay's Sam Lendrum going into the final undefeated, taking home the VB slab of the event after a combined wave score of 17.17 (9 and 8.17), and 17 year old Rory Jenkins knocked out highly acclaimed Dean Bowen (Gerroa) in the Semi Final.

Bombaci opened up with a 7.33 and Holmes responded with a series of waves worthy of the crown. Jenkins and Lendrum persisted answering wave after wave but it was Bombaci's precise wave selection that solidified the win, and gave him the title.

With two state crowns under her belt, current NSW Open Women's champion Brittani Nicholl created history today as she won her third NSW Open Women's Surfmasters Title.

Local South Coast surfers Rachel Campbell and Sky Burgess, along with current ASP Junior Women's world ranked no.18 surfer Phillipa Anderson (Merewether), gave Nicholl a run for her money.Campbell placed second by a mere 0.23 of a point followed by Burgess and Anderson who placed 3rd and 4th respectively.

The newest division to be added to the VB NSW Open Surfmasters Titles, was the Open Single Fin. Celebrating the style and fun of the 1970's with modern competition surfing, a champion was crowned and will represent NSW at the Australian Surf Festival.

Sydney's Northern Beaches surfer Rob Hazlewood came out on top, with a combined heat total of 13.50 in the Single Fin Final. Followed closely by Matt Hurworth (Cabarita Beach), Ian Bell (North Haven) and Cronulla's Matt Cook, who finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively.

In the Over 35 Women's division it was Cronulla surfer Akemi Oleary who's consistent competition surfing won her the NSW crown, closely followed by Kim Woolridge and Jonelle Byrne (Cabarita).

With tight battles playing throughout all the division finals, Team NSW looks to be a strong contender for the Australian Surf Festival held in August.

The VB NSW Open Surfmasters Titles is proudly supported by VB, Kiama Municipal Council, Kiama Tourism, Kiama Coast Tourist Parks, Gerringong Bowling Club, Suncorp and Surfing NSW.

Sundowner Holidays NSW Longboard Titles 2011

Jared Neal NSW Longboard Champion 2011
Jared Neal crowned NSW Open Men's Longboard Champion Saturday, 25 June 2011

The final day of the Sundowner Holidays NSW Longboard Titles kicked off today in tricky two foot surf at Rainbow Becah, Bonny Hills (Port Macquarie, NSW).

The early low tide and drop in swell did not affect high scores with excellent performances displayed across all thirteen divisions.

The heat to watch was the blue ribbon, Open Men's Nine Foot final, which saw finalists demonstrate the calibre of surfing that will represent NSW at the Australian titles.

Competition favourite and local Longboarder Ian Bell (Port Macquarie) came out of the blocks fast scoring an excellent 8.00 point ride, but failed to find a backup wave score to put him in front in the dying stages of the final.

Other surfers in hot pursuit of the title were Tweed Heads ripper, Beau Nixon, Bonny Hills surfer Damien Kelly and Jared Neal (Tweed Heads).

The star studded field attacked the final and the result went right down to the dying minutes when Tweed surfer Jared Neal found the all important back up score required to amass an impressive 17.27 points (9.5 and a 7.77) which defeated Bell's 14.73 (8.00 and a 6.73), Nixon's 14.67 and Kelly's 13.53 combined totals.

"The level of surfing was very high, surfing against new guys like Damien who was doing big airs all week really made for tough competition, the waves held up nicely and I'm really looking forward to representing NSW at the Australian Titles".

The other Blue Ribbon division is the highly anticipated Open Ladies, with South Coast surfer Erin Dark (Gerringong) leading the field with a 13.83 win over Claire Norman (Bondi), Rosin Carolan (Bina Burra) and Sam Walker (Freshwater) who finished second, third and fourth respectively.

Contest Director, Rob Nedwich is thrilled with this year's event and after a long week of surfing believes the best surfers have qualified from this year's state titles to represent NSW at the Australian Surf Festival back in Port Macquarie in August. Nedwich also thanked everybody for their effortless contributions at this year's event.

"It has been an awesome week of competition. The conditions have been perfect for a longboard event and the performance level has lifted this year. Neal has featured strongly in the last few years and was on of the favourites for 2011", said Nedwich.

"Judging by the standard of Longboarding seen this week the NSW team will be very strong for the Australian Longboard Titles to be held as part of the Australian Surf Festival at Port Macquarie in August, the standard of Longboarding in New South Wales is as good as anywhere in the world," said Nedwich.

The NSW Longboarding Association's State Titles attracted over one hundred and fifty entrants from across New South Wales in 2010 and was held in excellent conditions which run from June 20-26 at Coffs Harbour, New South Wales.

The Sundowner Holidays NSW Longboard Titles 2011 is proudly supported by Sundowner Holidays, Blue Water Bar and Restaurant, Suncorp, VB, Port Macquarie Hastings Council, SBT (Surfboard Tracker), The NSW Longboard Association and Surfing NSW.

Otis Carey, Botany Bay, Sydney, Australia

Picture
For a coupla weeks now, Sydney, on Australia's east coast, has been belted by rain and wind from the south. After an incredible autumn of consistently crisp offshores and groundswell, the first day of winter brought with it gloom and precipitation. And it ain't let up yet.

Every beach is a mess of foam. Pretty grim-lookin'. But those with a little grit won't be deterred. Like Otis Carey, pictured here. Yesterday, tired of the slop at his home beach of Bondi, Otis took a short drive over to Botany Bay, where y'can settle for a filtered-down swell, in exchange for a set-up that's ten-fold cleaner.

Sharky area that the bay is, Otis was spooked at one point when a lone fin cruised by, very close. It soon revealed a round beak and a cheeky grin, but for a moment there, the dolphin posing as a shark struck fear into the hearts of the small Botany Bay crowd.

Otis' style of surfing is aggressive and awesome. Kid goes for it, all the way. His areas of specialty lie above the lip and, when he's on, his surfing is pure energy. This shot is a telling moment – tail up, hands up, blazing hard despite wave size.

On april 29, 1770, Botany Bay was the place that Captain James Cook landed for the first time on Australian soil. What's most interesting about this photo is that Otis is a proud Indigenous Australian. The spray y'can see here on Otis' sled (which appears on all his boards) are the colours of the Aboriginal flag. It's amazing that, after 241 years and 17 days, Otis is surfing the bay where his ancestors first encountered the English sailor.

Cookie Serves Up A Feast Of Top Surfing
By sid

Despite his conversion to longboarding, Matty Cook knows how and when to turn-on the shortboard fireworks to gain the judges’ salute.

The “Cool Hand Luke” of the Shoes fraternity was all class as he handled some thumping set waves to clinch the June Open pointscore and move to within three points of title leader Jarrod Horner.

Cookie dazzled on his latest self-designed board, finding tubes, head dips and big sections to lacerate to finish ahead of Tom Mulder, Critta Durante and John Bonello in an entertaining final.

Tommy was the surfer to beat through the heats and semi-finals, but the set waves in the Alley didn’t fire up later in the day and Cookie made the most of the conditions.

Reigning champ Jarrod fell out of contention when he finished a disappointing third in his heat – more the result of a miscued Double Whammy decision than surfing performance.

Jarrod sits on 62.5 points, with Cookie on 62, followed by Kim Anderson on 39.5 and Mulder on 36.

Reece Moffat continued to punch holes in every wave caught to capture his second straight Junior pointscore final.

But he needed to because the efforts of Harrison Martin, Jacob Boylan and Nathan Hatheier were all outstanding in the clean but often trying conditions.

The Moff heads the championship leaderboard on 57 points – five clear of Boylan. Nathan Martin is in third spot on 39 and his older brother Harrison is on 31.

The swell was a bit big for the SuperGroms, so they will have to wait until either later in the month or for the July comp.

Songs from the Ether

Picture
May 31, 2011

Songs From The Ether is a live music and surf film experience curated by Andrew Kidman. It features live music from his band The Windy Hills teamed with projections from his latest film ‘Lost In The Ether’ and the new film from Patrick Trefz’z: ‘Idiosyncrasies’.

Following on from the success of Last Hope in the live format – the production travelling across the world and drawing large crowds at the Powerhouse in Brisbane, The Perth International Arts Festival and New York’s Surf Fim Festival - Kidman and his band The Windy Hills have reconvened to create a similar experience for his new film.

The Windy Hills (featuring Kidman, Joe Jones, Paul Brewer and Jay Kruegner) formed originally as The Brown Birds From Windy Hills, with soundtracking these films in a live setting their uniting passion. Following a string of Kidman’s solo albums, the band’s first record Three Sails To The Wind was released in 2007 before Kidman’s recent filmic project the Last Hope took flight. In January of this year they released the album Friend From Another Star (the single “She was a girl” could be a flipside to Lou Reed’s Walk on the Wild Side said the Sydney Morning Herald). And “Friend From Another Star will no doubt win scores of friends in 2011 with its eerie, yet euphoric sound that’s bound to stand up to repeat listens. In a nutter, this is spinifex surf music at its optimum and most pure level played out by a band who knows how to get into the zone, ‘Road Block’ being arguably one of the first grand Oz tracks of the new decade” - Nick Argyriou, Rhythms Magazine

Kidman’s own home, nestled on a rural property on the North Coast of NSW, would provide a backdrop for the conception of their second album. Recorded in a small studio in nearby Mullumbimby, Friend from Another Star is more muscular & varied – some songs wilder, some cleaner, some soft with acoustics and warm with Americana. While not directly inspired by the ocean, it possesses a similar fluidity and escapist quality that echo the band’s shared passion and connection with the sea.

Call it a surf night, a music improv night… call it what you will, Songs From The Ether shows the ocean and surfing in a mesmerising light, with live soundscapes and visuals to disappear to. Kidman & band will tour the production across Australia’s east coast this June & July.

Surf Report with John Veage
Perfect surfing conditions this morning, after the mixed bag we have been getting. The weekend was absolutely pumping; 4-6ft East swell, offshore both days...Monday dawned southerly and smaller, yesterday bigger and windy but cleaning up with the tide.

Today the whole beach was pretty good, nice banks whereever you looked...and if you really looked there were some smokers! Terapai found the spot but had to wait for them on the low tide. But as the tide comes in there should be waves everywhere. Today's pics were taken at the Alley, where the left suck turned into a right and at Elouera/the Wall where there was some good potential.

The rest of the week should give us some nice waves with the swell dropping on Thursday/Friday but with north/west, south/west winds until Saturday, when the wind will tend south/east and the swell will rise accordingly to 3-4ft on Sat and 5-6ft on Sunday.

Sutherland Shire Regional Titles 7-8th May 2011

Absolute cracking 3-5ft waves broke all weekend at the Alley for competitors in this years Sutherland Shire Regional Titles. Every heat was a smorgasbord of big manoeuvres, mostly on edge carves but with enough new age slide-air- reverse thingos to keep the crowds entertained.

To add to the excitement was the number of Sandshoes Boardriders competing and shredding the hell out of it to claim great results in everything we entered.

1st place under 14's Nathan Martin
1st place under 21's Jesse Horner
2nd place under 16's Harrison Martin, who also scored the highest wave score winning himself a case of V.B yiew!
2nd place Single Fin Classic Matty Cook
4th place under 14's Dion Earl

May Pointscore

Saturday 7th May 2011

Tommy Mulder produced a masterful backside attack to claim the May point score Open final, held in clean one metre swell on an ideal autumn day – but Jarrod Horner is still leading the title race.

Mulder switched from the rights and lefts to pile on the scores throughout his heat, semi-final and final, getting more vertical with each wave taken. His gravity-defying upside down re-entries had the crowd hooting.

Matt Cook was also in top form, making every manoeuvre count as he powered to second placing, just a point ahead of Horner in third.

Shaun Davey posted a fourth, Mitchell Hodges fifth and Dave Moffat, in a major upset, grabbed sixth.

Horner, the reigning champ, maintains his spot on top of the leaderboard, followed by Cookie, Kim Anderson and Tyler Barnes.

The battle for supremacy in the Junior championship between Reece Moffat and Jacob Boylan continued, with both riders on fire throughout the event.

Reece prevailed in the final, with Jacob runner-up, pint-sized Nathan Martin a fraction behind, and Tom Lotter in fourth.

The SuperGroms division is getting hotter and hotter, with Roan O’Sullivan and Dion Earle going one and two in the final to both leapfrog Eathen Jackson on the championship ratings.

The two big improvers in this division, Jed Felice and Travis Heaps, were again impressive in finishing third and fourth.

Byron Bay Bluesfest 2011

Picture
ZZ Top
The Byron Bay Bluesfest or East Coast International Blues & Roots Music Festival as it was known by, is an annual music festival held for five days over the Easter long weekend. It has previously been held at Belongil Fields in Byron Bay but has now relocated to a new home at Tyagarah Tee Tree Farm which is nestled on 120 hectares, just 11 kilometres north of Byron Bay and 8 kilometres south of Brunswick Heads. It is the perfect place to hold the Festival, and will allow 17,500 Festival visitors per day and 6,500 campers over the entire weekend.

The 22nd Annual Byron Bay Bluesfest, Tyagarah Tea Tree Farm, has one of the best line-up in recent history including Ben Harper and the Relentless 7, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Grace Jones, BB King and Bob Dylan.

My favorite were certainly ZZ Top who played all their classics like "Legs" "Gimmie all your Lovin" and "Sharp Dressed Man"

The last three days surfing conditions have been near to perfect with a 3ft southerly groundswell pushing good little waves into every beach on the east coast. The winds were ideal coming from the W/NW.

Not a lot of people around at some of the spots these photos were taken (nobody at some).  A really great time of year to be surfing, I'm so exhausted i could just about sleep the next three days but the forecast reads for even bigger waves this weekend :)

Jensen and Smith Claim All-American Victory at Malfunction Surf Festival

Picture
 KINGSCLIFF / AUSTRALIA (Sunday 27th March, 2011):
American surfers Taylor Jensen (Oceanside), 27, and Jennifer Smith (San Diego) , 25, upstaged their Australian counterparts to win the respective ASP Australasia Longboard Qualifying Series (LQS) Cancer Institute NSW men’s and women’s divisions.

Californian carver Jensen, who has placed 2nd in the LQS men’s division at the Malfunction for the past two years, finally etched his name onto the event’s winner’s list, beating Buderim’s Mitch Surman, former ASP Men’s World Longboard Champion Josh Constable and Currumbin’s Jackson Close in an entertaining final.

“It feels pretty good to finally win this event,” said Jensen, who claimed US $2000 and 250 rating points.

“I started off really slow. I couldn’t get a wave, fell on my first one and wasn’t feeling great. But I finally lucked into a couple smaller ones which ran along the bank.”

The lanky natural foot accruing a 9.33 and an 8.82 to finish in the numero-uno position on 18.16 points (out of a possible 20).

Despite his third placing in the day’s blue ribbon final, Constable heads the men’s LQS ratings ahead of Jensen, with Surman, Jared Neal (Coffs Harbour) and Harley Ingleby (Emerald Beach) rounding out the top 5. The final event of the Australasian LQS is the Whalebone Classic, which starts on July 16.

Smith, the two-time ASP Women’s World Longboard champion (2007 and 2009), was in a class of her own in the 30-minute finale, schooling Melissa Combo (Ballina), Emma Webb (Victoria) and Jodie Barsby (Crescent Head) with a combined two-wave total of 14.14, which included a 6.47 on her opening ride and an even stronger 7.67.

Smith, who claimed a second place at the Noosa Festival, said she was eager to taste victory in the LQS women’s division during her time in Australia.

“It’s been good,” she said. “Getting second at Noosa was the main reason I came to the Malfunction. I wasn’t going to do it and coming so close in Noosa I wanted to do better. I haven’t done well in Australia over the past few years, so it feels good to win.”

Following today’s result, Smith leads the LQS women’s ratings ahead of Chelsea Williams (Kingscliff), Combo, Webb and Bianca Anstiss (Currumbin).

In the Greenline SUP Pro final, Kingscliff’s Justin Holland defeated former ASP World Tour competitor Luke Egan (Coolangatta), Currumbin’s Jackson Close and Noosa’s Dane Wilson.

After a slow start, Holland unloaded a bevy of big forehand moves to notch a 5.73 and a 7.43 to finish with a two-wave combined total of 13.16 (out of a possible 20).

Constable takes out Golden Breed Pro in Noosa

Picture
Josh Constable
NOOSA, Queensland/Australia (Sunday, March 20, 2011) – Noosa’s favourite surfing son Josh Constable (Perigian Beach, Noosa) has claimed the 1 Star ASP Golden Breed Pro, cleaning up his competition in the small, clean surf at the event’s back up site of Access 12, during the Noosa Festival of Surfing today.

The five times Australian Men’s Longboard Champion and 2006 ASP Men’s World Longboard Champion proved unstoppable in the final, opening up with a cracker 7.50 (out of ten) ride and followed up with an excellent 8.00 ride to secure a huge lead over the rest of the field.

“Conditions were tough but I aimed to get off to a quick start, get a few waves under the belt and then wait for some better ones and it worked out well,” Constable said.

Constable surfed a smart heat in the tricky conditions. Mixing up his performance with skillful nose rides and massive off the top snaps, the powerful Sunshine Coast surfer provided just the kind of all round performance the judges were looking for, earning a well deserved 15.50 heat total (out of 20.00) to defeat Jared Neal (Aus), Taylor Jensen (USA) and Thomas Kibblewhite (NZL).

“You cant sit there and wish it was six foot ‘cos its not six foot,” Constable said. “I don’t mind if its small, I’m from here and we don’t get big waves anyway so I’m used to surfing little waves like that. I felt comfortable out there and just kept building momentum and I’m happy I came through with the win.”

Reaching his first ever final, Neal posted an impressive showing opting to surf the less frequent lefthanders that took him all the way to the beach and was rewarded with great 7.80 and 6.35 scores (out of ten).

“I’ve always struggled up here in Noosa so it was good to get out there and get a through a few heats,” Neal said. “We had the best longboarders in the world out here so it was good to get past a few of them although one more position would have been good.”

In the 1 Star ASP Revo Eyewear Women’s Pro it was Chelsea Williams (Tweed Heads, AUS) who stole glory from 2X ASP Women’s World Longboard Champion Jennifer Smith (USA), executing a perfect hang-ten maneuver to secure this year’s title.

While Smith held an early heat lead with two great 6.50 and 5.75 rides, Williams came from behind backing up her early 6.00 with a solid 6.90 to bump Smith from first to second, the pair defeating Isabelle Braly (Byron Bay, NSW) who finished in third while Bianca Anstiss (Currumbin, QLD) took fourth.

Noosa’s stylemaster Harrison Roach won arguably the most exciting heat of the day during the Sunshine Coast Noserrider Pro final, securing his first ever victory over a selection of the world’s best noseriders including Matt Cuddihy (Noosa), Taylor Jensen (USA) and defending event Champion Christian Wach (USA).

Roach who has made four finals but never taken the crown, rode two amazing waves on the nose, performing his trademark soul arch to win the heat in front of his home crowd .

“I’m so excited I can’t even believe it,” Roach said after his win. “I’ve been surfing in this event since I was 16, this is my fourth final and finally to win one – I’m so excited. I was screaming out there, I had all my friends on the beach so it’s a great way to do it.”

Rahn Goddard of West Australia took a surprise victory in the Smorgasboarder Magazine Old Mal division, choosing to sit on the far left peak away from the rest of the field, his solid wave selection and good drop knee cut-backs earned him a 12.85 heat total to finish ahead of Luke Potter (Qld), Harrison Roach (Qld), Isaac Fields (Aus), Isabelle Braly (NSW) and Matt Chojnacki (NSW).

Jordie Brown (Skenes Creek, Vic) won the Open Men’s Amateur division with ease, racing ahead of the field to take the win over Ben Jones (SA) in second and Damien Farago (NSW) in third.

Erin Dark (NSW) secured a narrow victory over second place surfer Monique Keen (Qld) with Molly Powell (Vic) placing third in the Open Women’s Amatuer division.

The Noosa Festival of Surfing saw nine great days of competition completed. For full results log on to http://www.aspaustralasia.com/live/2011/noosa/results.php.

Bobby Brown exhibition lines up the Golden Breed

Picture
Bobby Brown at Angourie 1963 Photo: Albe Falzon
Noosa hosts the travelling Bobby Brown exhibition, celebrating the surfing life of a late legend.

The exhibition which has been on show at the Gold Coast Surf World Surf Museum, Currumbin will now hit the road to be part of the Noosa Festival of Surfing from 12th – 20th March 2011.

This unique exhibition features timeless photos, original surfboards, memorabilia and personal artifacts of Bobby Brown considered to be one of the all–time greats of Australian surfing who was tragically struck down in his prime.

Bobby Brown began surfing at Wanda Beach, Cronulla in 1957 and was ranked with the best surfers in the sixties like Midget Farrelly, Nat Young, Bob McTavish, Peter Drouyn and Kevin Brennan. Prominent Australian magazines of the era, Surfing World and Surfabout, comphrensively covered Bobby's brief but brilliant surfing career. He was a reluctant star who loved just going surfing and appeared in Bob Evans' classic East Coast 1963 surf safari movie, "The Young Wave Hunters" and Paul Witzig's groundbreaking 1967 Aussie epic, "The Hot Generation." THG has been recently reproduced and dedicated to the memories of both Bobby and the late Kevin "The Head" Brennan who died of a drug overdose in 1975. Both members of the great Windansea Club, share an iconic moment surfing together in uncrowded waves at Byron Bay! Bobby unexpectedly died in 1967 when glassed over a game of pool, though Brown's legend lives on while his legacy paved the way for many great surfers from the Cronulla Southside area and is held in the same high regard as Mark "Occy" Occhilupo.

Organiser of the Noosa Festival of Surfing, Phil Jarrat, met Bobby Brown when Phil was only 13 and Bobby then 18 taught Phil how to surf and is naturally stoked about the BB Exhibition coming to this years Noosa premier surfing event.

"The Noosa Festival of Surfing is delighted to be hosting the Bobby Brown Exhibition at this year's event. We regard it as an honour to be able to pay tribute to one of Australia's finest surfers, and the venue of the Golden Breed concept store is entirely appropriate, given that it is managed by Dane Wilson, whose dad, Dave, was one of Bobby's closest mates in Cronulla. Hats off to Andy Mac for making this happen."

Murray Walding, Operations Manager Golden Breed Surf Noosa, was equally excited. "When the opportunity arose for the Bobby Brown Exhibition to be on display at the Golden Breed store in Noosa, in conjunction with the Noosa Festival of Surfing, we jumped at the chance and why wouldn't we! Golden Breed store's retail manager- Dane Wilson, is also CEO of Gordon and Smith Australia, and Dane's father Dave had worked with G&S since day one, glassing all of Bobby's boards and knows the history of this famous company inside out. The whole idea seems like a perfect fit!" And in breaking news, Dane Wilson who is a former Australian Longboard champion has pointed out that several private collectors have dusted off a couple of Bobby Brown Models for inclusion in the exhibition, and that those boards will also be available for sale!"

"We can't wait!" said Murray who will join family and friends of Bobby such as Bobby's oldest brother John and Bobby's fiancée Lorraine McIntyre and many great surfing celebrities including PT (1976 World Professional champion Peter Townend), who worked for G&S in his early days plus American co-founder of Gordon and Smith, Floyd Smith making the special trip down under to pay tribute and to catch up at the Opening Ceremony on Monday 14th March at the Golden Breed Store in Hasting St., Noosa from 6.30pm.

"I hitched to the beach for long-board regional s on Friday after work all the way from Cooma to Mollymook... got the best lifts (more 2 tell - gurus)
Slept on the beach... managed to find the comp just in time for my heat... had to borrow a board randomly and paddle out in 1st heat with mil- seconds to spare... made it threw... hung with a couple of friends that also helped me supplement my $1 budget for breaky... surfed in the final (last heat of day 5pm) and then proceeded to hitch home (another guru picked me up and drove me to my sisters doorstep in Canberra)... GOOD TIMES!"  Jay Mulherin.

"Drive down early to Ulladulla for regional longboard selection comp. Best performers go to N.S.W titles at Coffs Harbour to then advance to the Australian Titles.  The surf was too mean and nasty to get amongst it with the in water video. Some awesome surfing and good company. Judged a few important close finals. I am especially pleased that Max Boys will represent us in the 60s division. Max is a potential Oz champ if he gets the waves. Big smile on my dial and will sleep well after climbing those stairs at Rennies beach today." Allan Williams.

The first heat of the day was the 9ft Opens at 7am. If you placed first you were made to wait until the last heat of the day, 5pm!! which was the final, 10 hours later!! After a beautiful day of hanging around at the beach, surfing, sun baking Elisha and I decided to call it a day as there was still 3 hours left before the final. We were both pretty tired and sun burnt and not looking forward to the drive back to Cronulla so we bailed. The top six place-getters go through to the State Finals,  i took 6th :)

A short report and photos on the DV8’s 26th BANANA CLASSIC, by Dave Milnes ...

Photo at top of Hayden Emery, runner-up in the Opens; while the backhand bash is of Matt Cook surfing in the Eight-footers (he won the Opens). Both photos by Dave Milnes.

Feb 2011.

The night before I had a quick check of the weather forecast for the Saturday. It looked like the DV8 plan to hold the contest at the iconic location of the Farm would work out. The forecast was for NE winds of 10 to 20 knots, with an easterly swell of one metre.

On arrival in the dark the car park at the west-end was nearly already full. I could soon see why as about 40 surfers were already in the water, surfing the Alley, as the west-end bank is called by the locals. As the sun came up the DV8s set up the contest on the middle bank, which had a swell of about 1-1.5 metres, with both lefts and rights and smooth water. Later the Christian Surfers club set up on the eastern bank.

As light conditions improved, the early semifinals saw some great riding. By midday the NE wind had increased to about 15k, and the tide was beginning to drop with low tide due about 3.00pm. Conditions were now not as good as the morning, as the waves were breaking further out and the wind was flattening them. But conditions were still good enough to ensure that the finals would be run without any problems for the competitors. The final wind strength rose to about 20K+.

After the last final presentations were made to all finalists, officials also thanked the contest major sponsors: Skipp Surfboards, SDS, Shellharbour Roofing and Alby Weeks.

A special presentation, in memory of Frank Latta, was made to Frank’s wife Michelle, who was present. Also thanks were given to the members’ wives who manned the food tent all day, dishing out food for the hungry horde.

Results were as follows, from first place –

Opens: Matt Cook, Hayden Emery, Nick Farago, Shane Baker, Josh Dunn, Damian Farago.

Open Womens: Erin Dark, April Charles, Brooke Farrow, Ashley Rutten,  Stella Crick, Jess Stocker.

Old Mal Final: Josh Dunn, Bill Morris, Nathan East, Chris Brown, Rhys Williams, Steve Marsh.

Juniors: Jake Bevan, Erin Dark, Hugh Daugaard, Scott Hynard, Jake Eider, April Charles.

Over 30s: Jeff Dunn, Dan Rowlands, Rob Smith, Dave Pimm, Dean Cristallo, Tim Riley.

Over 40s: Peter Unwin, Tony Boyd, Rob Lumby, Troy Keen, Grahame Hynard, Mike Griggs.

Over 50s: John Skinner, Steve Rutten, Rob Armstrong, Chris Brown, Steve Walsh, Scott Davis (from Maroochydore).

Over 55s: Ken Middleton, Ray Mahony, Dave Pimm, Bill Morris, Nev (Nifty) Weaver, Mick Milne.

Eight-foot: Nick Farago, Matt Cook, Damian Farago, Dean Cristallo, Steve Rutten, Tony Boyd.

Winner of the Robbie Holt Memorial Tube Ride Trophy was Ken Middleton

The 26th Annual SKIPP BANANA DV8 MALIBU CLASSIC
held in memory of Frank Latta

Picture
Saturday February 19 2011 at The Farm,
Shellharbour, NSW South Coast

Gorgeous morning with two to three foot clean waves rolling in. Was a great day to be involved in and a part off as  perfect conditions made for high level competitive surfing. There was also boards, photos and film of Frank on display to look at. A day that i think the Mayor of Sandshoes would of been stoked on.
I was lucky enough to get a few nice waves and place 1st in the Opens and 2nd in the 8 foot division.

"Matt Cook was a class above any surfers I saw there today. Matt was especially curious about the naming of the event "Banana Classic" . DV8 president Steve Walsh explained that the first Banana comp was a memorial to a much loved local whose nickname was Banana. Even though his reported death in Hawaii was proved a mistake when he phoned his Mum a few years later , the Comps name and date stuck".  Alan Williams, surf photographer.

"CONGRATULATIONS on your huge win.  It was a pleasure to judge & an even bigger pleasure to hear your amazing winners speech..mate you are a true champ.I wish you all the very best in the future & we are honored to have you in the Club.  Cheers mate." Rob Smith, Southside Malibu Club's Vice President and Sponsorship Officer.

Voodoo!!

Well.... what do I say.... our first trip to Voodoo... to surf , shoot , even look at it.... SICKKKKK!

Jake was psyched to hit it with Cookie on their HP's. We had to listen to some METAL on the way out there to really fire him up! haha Cookie was carving, Jake was picking most of the ones in between the sets, although he took one bomb, with a face more than twice his height, hit some chop and came a cropper... ouch... face plant.... good learning curve for him out there. Dad was pretty nervous for his boy!

The guy on the shorty in shot 1 was smokin, seemingly picking off all of the sets... and shot 3, well what can I say, Ox rips wherever he surfs, be it Shoes, Voodoo, The Island... everywhere!

There's some shots of Jako but he wants to pick his one out, and as he worked till 10 last night he didnt get the chance to have a look... I'll post it soon enough! I'll get a better angle next time I'm there... was time limited so couldn't walk too far... Yew!

Sandy Bay Hyundai Pro Longboard, New Zealand

Picture
Josh Constable (Noosa)
Sunday 6th February 2011

Australia’s Josh Constable has claimed the Hyundai Pro Longboard Tour title at Sandy Bay, Whangarei, New Zealand today – the first event of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Australasia Longboard Qualifying Series (LQS) for 2011. Constable now leads the four event LQS and also jumps back into the lead on the Hyundai Pro Longboard Tour in New Zealand after winning the two events he has contested to date.

The final day of the Sandy Bay event took place in clean 0.5m – 1.0m waves with light winds and crisp conditions. After the previous two days of competition, day three delivered the best waves of the event and the large crowd witnessed a true spectacle of quality surfing.

The Open Men’s Final was run in the best waves of the entire event. Clean 1.0m waves broke on two clearly defined Sandy Bay peaks and the world class surfers thrived in the fun conditions. Harley Ingleby (AUS) opened up the final scoring a solid 9.0 ride (out of a possible 10) with a number of vertical back hand re-entries on a punchy left hander.

Josh Constable (Noosa) replied with some super stylish nose riding showing true class but young Mitch Surman (AUS) stole the lead at the half way point scoring a 9.5 on a long right hander, linking vertical re-entries with a nice long nose ride. Surman who is one of Australia’s most promising up and coming surfers, had been one of the form surfers throughout the entire contest and displayed a full repertoire of traditional and progressive moves.

However it was Josh Constable (AUS) who scored a perfect 10.0 point ride with seven minutes to go and followed it up with an 8.6 point ride to take the lead with two minutes to go, a lead he never let go.

Constable, who was runner up at the 2010 event here at Sandy Bay, put on a repeat performance from earlier heats absolutely destroying two long right handers right to the beach. It was evident from his body language that he was pleased the waves came his way and he was able to take the lead.

The former world champion showed true competitive prowess and was untouchable in the final.

“I thought Mitch had it in the bank, and even after my 10 I was still in second place” he said.” I’m stoked on my win here, it’s a great way to start the LQS year and I love coming back to Sandy Bay.”

Constable, who was runner up in the 2010 event, will no doubt be a hot contender for the 2011 Hyundai Pro Longboard Tour Champion.

Earlier in the day, 2009 ASP World Champion Harley Ingleby (AUS) surfed an impressive semifinal heat showing true class and moving through to the final. The upset of the day was the semifinal elimination of Taylor Jensen (USA), opening the door for sole Kiwi campaigner Phil Morris (Orewa). Morris put on a crowd pleasing effort and young Queenslander Mitch Surman (AUS) wafted fins to secure his spot in the final alongside eventual champion Constable.

ASP LQS Open Men’s Division Final 1 – Josh Constable (AUS)
2 – Mitch Surman (AUS)
3 – Harley Ingleby (AUS)
4 – Phil Morris (NZL)

GOLDEN BREED NSW OLD MAL TITLES
Bellambi Point, Woollongong, NSW. Saturday 29th January  2011.

Picture

In this age of high-tech pop-outs and space-age materials, it's great to see the Bellambi crew at the STOMP club (Southern Traditional Old Mal Pilots) run a comp without a shred of epoxy in sight. While some of the old boards were very sweet, others were truly bizarre - but the boys and girls proved there's still much fun to be had surfing just about anything that a drug crazed shaper could whack glass on.

Divisions included the Greenough Fin (pre '68 boards) for both over 40s and under, the D-Fin (pre '63), and the Transition Boards. The latter was where the weird and wacky came in - lots of pintails around seven-foot with fins in the wrong place and the most unforgiving rails on the planet. Old fella Billy Morris showed up the young guns to win this one, although Rob "Lumbo" Lumby had probably the nicest rounded square-tail at the beach and came close to snatching it from The Master, with Jarrett Napper third.

Considering Bellambi is a rocky pointbreak, there was some pretty amazing and downright daring surfing sans legropes. Among many stand-outs on the old mals were Paul O'Grady, Lynden Riley, Chris Bate, Scott Downing, Nick Farago, as well as Josh Dunn in the Mystery final. At one stage in the Mystery, most of the finalists were swimming around collecting each others lost boards in a grand show of sportsmanship . . .  or is that sportspersonmanship? Whatever it is, it typified the spirit of the STOMP Titles.

With a solid spike in SE swell early Friday morning and lack of banks able to handle it on the Cronulla stretch, we hit a little reef on the south side of Cronulla to find 1 guy out and some perfect waves for Cookie to slide his log into. Freaky to find this place that bare when it was as good as it was.... SCORED!

Common Ground Byron Bay.com

Picture
Maxed Out : Byron Bay : Buy Print
The Common Ground of Byron Bay is a tri-weekly image-based mailout straight to your inbox, exposing ByronBay  in all it’s diverse glory and beauty. Common Ground is a labor of love by Byron Bay locals Johnny Abegg, Tim Manton and Dave Keam. We hope you enjoy our beautiful home as much as we do.

Gladiators and Spectators

Byron Bay was an amphitheater of gladiators, battling the prey of the ocean, while spectators marvelled in “Ooooo’s” and “Ahhhh’s”.

Tropical cyclones Vania and Zelia morphed into the one super force, producing a Goliath of marching swell lines, detonating on the Byron focal point of Main Beach, and the Wreck. Beach-goers where washed upon the grassy knoll, to watch some of the biggest waves to hit Byron in a long while. Broken boards and bodies, and the glory of taming the odd oceanic beast where the alure of the ocean’s beastly beauty.

As the carnage prevailed in the water, “Beautiful”, a man in floral attire was giving blessing’s of love… good to have you back in the bay old pal.

The weekend of the 15th and 16th of January defined what it meant to be a surfer.

Lining Up, In Byron Bay Today. Yep everyone and everything was lining up today, while Huey was wrapping lines past the cape, the crew were lining up for car parks, in Byron Bay today. There were some folks messing up and puffing out there egos all over the place, a bit lame really guys, you know who you are. Thankfully however, sanity prevailed amongst the vast majority and a few crew even managed to get a car space and score some waves. In fact for a while it was even a well functional chilled vibe in lineup. As for a short time some of the more talented crew decided to take charge of the situation and just take turns instead of allowing the hassle to continue. Good stuff guys, a joyous example to behold in the midst of much silliness, In Byron Bay Today.

VonZipper x Stab Poolside Party

Picture
The VonZipper x Stab Poolside party went down Sunday 28th November.
Set-up the day prior was under a smiling sun and high morale. Sunday morning looked ominous. Clouds gathered, droplets of rain fell, etc. But the bars were stocked, the mansion was polished and morale remained high. And a little precipitation did nothing to deter the party people.

Parties usually take an hour or two to get going, but Poolside bumped from the start. A coupla bands kicked off. Their spot on the highest balcony served as a good vantage point for projecting sound out over the spread. Following the last group's final song, the music wandered out onto a hip-hop tip, which suited everyone just fine. Below the highest balcony was a bar and the pool. It was a deep pool, and bluer than most. And it was 30 degrees. Below the pool was a tennis court, covered in bean chairs and umbrellas. The sheet of plastic that usually acts as a pool-cover was hung from a balcony down over the tennis court, acting instead as a people-cover from the intermittent spitting of rain. And still none were deterred.

Bondi Beach Burritos floated around on plates. Cherry-coloured alcohol was squirted into people's mouths by a party liaison in a Hawaiian shirt. The diving board creaked when swimmers bounced from it. People danced and kissed. Neighbours stared in fear and wonderment from their windows. And though our furious readers will tell you otherwise, the neighbours weren't alone as they thought to themselves, "Who the hell are all of these crazy people? What the hell is going on here? And how the hell do I get an invite?"

Cronulla Surf Museum.com

Picture
About Us  Welcome to the Cronulla Surf Museum.
The aim of this site is to document the history of surfboard riding at Cronulla Beach. From the early days through the 70's 80's,90's and beyond.

We will take a look back at the Surfers, influential characters, comps, clubs, plus classic days and memorable highlights over the past decades. The site will be updated regularily and any contributions are welcome.

Chris Stroh Started shooting photos in the early 70's after buying a Nikonos 2 camera. Inspired by local photographers Dave Shaw, Greg Button and Steve Cores magazine called "Surf".

In the early days he shot The Point and Shark Island but after buying a Century 650 lens his focused moved up to the action on the beaches as well.

By the mid 80's he was full time pro and freelance photographer for Tracks, Surfing Life, Waves, Surfing Magazine, Slam and later on Underground Surf. Today he still shoots whenever the waves are going off but mostly for fun.

Craig Stroh A former Australian Schoolboy surfing champion, Craig gave up competing to focus on surf photography around the early 90's.

He was responsible for the movies Addiction, 2230 and is currently about to release the much anticipated follow up DVD called "2" featuring Cronulla waves and surfers only. Craig has had photos published in Tracks, Waves, Surfing Life and Underground Surf Magazine.

Surf report with John Veage 10 Nov, 2010

There is no real surf to report, the whole week has been 1-2ft and nothing is forecast to change....A whole week of NW winds early going NE than a 2ft (just) NE swell just pushing onto the beaches.Throw the odd weak Southerly in for bad measure and there you have it.

Monday was the pick of the week so if you missed that...Unlucky!

There are people talking about a bad summer forecast so we can only hope the predicted El Nina/El Nino patterns don't reflect the last time, when we had bad flat spells.

There are times when a Mal can be ridden, this may be one of those times.

Expect to see an onslaught of Gay Gondolier's on the beaches as well this summer, Mals with weapons, fantastic!

Ex Cronulla surfer/ shaper Matt Hurwurth (shaping co) is returning to his roots with the opening of a new shop in the Surf Road arcade this weekend. It's a little hard to find but if you're after good boards at a good price, drop in and have a look (behind O'Porto).

Thursday 11/11 there is a launch at the Currumbin surf museum, on the life and times of Cronulla surfer Bobby Brown, put together by Andrew McKinnon. If you get up to the Goldy in the next month go and have a look.

Cronulla boardriders have the "Nugget" memorial this Sat at Voodoo. I think it will be a miracle if that occurs, so see you on the beach, and keep everything crossed.

Bobby Brown Cronulla’s first surfing legend to be officially recognised

Picture
Bobby Brown

Bobby Brown Cronulla’s first surfing legend to be officially recognised
There have been many talented surfers from Cronulla and the Southside beaches of Sydney. Names like Eddie Conlon, Gary Hughes, Jim Banks, Ross Marshall, Gary Green, Michael Mackie, Richard Herbert, Rod Baldwin and of course the one and only World Champion Mark “Occy” Occhilupo that established themselves through-out the 70’s and 80’s. However the history of the Southside is not complete without the acknowledgement of Cronulla’s first surfing hero Robert Eric Brown or better known as Bobby Brown.1946 – 1967.

The Gold Coast Surf World Surf Museum at Currumbin will kick off the Bobby Brown Exhibition on Thursday, 11th November (Remembrance Day) 2010 celebrating the surfing legend hosted by local surf reporter Andrew McKinnon who won the last Bobby Brown Open Memorial at Wanda Beach, Cronulla in 1970 at the age of 16.

“Bobby was my all time hero growing up as a gremlin on the Gold Coast in the early sixties. You couldn’t help being inspired by his contest results, his style, and cool demeanor!” said McKinnon who has been the custodian of the Bobby Brown perpetual trophy modeled on the famous Jack Eden photograph of Bobby on his G&S stringerless board (which will be in the exhibition) at Sandon Point. The Soul Arch sculpture trophy was presented by Bobby’s fiancé Lorraine McIntyre and has been McKinnon’s number one prize item for the last 40 years.

“While I never met Bobby, I watched him surf in the 1966 National finals at Coolangatta, and have felt a strong affinity with his legendary spirit! The BB Exhibition is my way of giving thanks and invoking his incredible spirit.”

Bobby had a raw unbridled surfing approach considered to be super radical for the day, sometimes riding shorter boards than the normal equipment.

“He broke his 9ft Jackson Surfboard in half at Cronulla Point one morning,” explained close Cronulla mate Brian “Chubby” Kirkham, who then watched in amazement as Bobby came back to the Point on a cut-down version of the same board. “He reshaped the tail, whacked on the same fin creating a 7ft 6in shorter board than the original. He was pulling off full rail carving turns on this shorter board but none of us thought any differently as Bobby surfed great on all types of boards.”

Cronulla photographer Bob Weeks (find photo attached) recorded these revolutionary sessions in May 1963 when Bobby was only 16.

Bobby Brown was way ahead of his time but was sadly struck down in his prime dying at only 20 years of age as a result of a glassing attack in a Sydney pub over a game of pool in August 1967. His premature tragic ending devastated his Family, Fiancé and friends trying to come to terms with his unexpected loss and the question begging “What if?”

Bobby was planning to marry his childhood sweetheart Lorraine McIntyre at the end of the year and go to Hawaii for their honeymoon. They had never been out of Australia.

Paul Witzig who made a number of groundbreaking movies of the Australian Surfing Heroes in the sixties is currently restoring his first masterpiece, “The Hot Generation” and will dedicate the digitalised release to both Bobby Brown and the late Kevin Brennan who share a segment surfing at Tallows, Byron Bay.

The opening party for Bobby’s Exhibition is on Thursday night 11th November, at 6.30pm and will be a great night to celebrate this enigmatic Australian surfing great and will be well attended by Bobby’s Family including his oldest brother John who has written a special poem for presentation.

Other legendary surfers in attendance will include Cronulla’s surfing pioneer and artist Gary Birdsall who has painted a portrait of his old mate for the Exhibition, other memorabilia on display includes original Bobby Brown boards and trophies, timeless photo’s and classic 16mm and 8 mm movies. World Surfing Champion Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew will help Andrew “AndyMac” McKinnon MC the night including live music and a presentation of Bobby Browns remarkable life and legacy!

The Bobby Brown celebrating a surfing legend exhibition will be on show at Gold Coast Surf World from November 2010 until January 2011. In the New Year the Bobby Brown Exhibition will take off for the Noosa Surfing Festival and Kingscliff Malfunction in March, and Surf World Torquay in April during the 50th anniversary of the Bells Beach Easter event and back to Bobby’s home turf of Cronulla and Wollongong in September 2011.

McKinnon is currently writing a book on the life and times of Bobby Brown.

This morning the swell was still good with the high tide showing up all the rips on the beach.

Surf early as the wind is due to swing to the south east.

These conditions are due to slowly drop into the weekend where Sunday will be left with 2ft waves and nor east winds....back to summer conditions.

Surfers should make the most of this swell cause it might be the last spring surprise, you never know.

I took today's pics at the Alley where there were some good lefts but not like yesterday where when the wind backed off and the tide dropped a bit at about 8.30, it was looking perfect.

Congrats to Steph Gilmore who was crowned World champ yesterday in Puerto Rico...4 years in a row, watch out Layne!

In more unbelievable world news Andy Irons has been found dead in a hotel room in Dallas, after trying to get home to Hawaii after becoming sick in Pueto Rico.

One of Occys best mates, Andy at age 32 and a three-time world champ, was on the comeback after a year off the tour.

RIP and condolences to his family and friends.

There is not much more to say after that.

October radness

Picture
Excellent waves on Saturday at the Alley....as the day went on the Alley picked up and went sick and on dark it was as good as some says it gets.
Sunday and Monday both had good waves with offshores blowing into midday, hopefully the prediction of 20 cyclones this season will eventuate for us and we keep getting north swell into the dreaded summer season.

Howling NE winds whipped up a solid 3-5ft ENE windswell late on Friday October 15.

During the very early hours of Saturday morning a vigorous winter like Westerly change pushed through, cleaning up the ENE swell and sending temperatures southward.

The massive cold front that passed over NSW left state emergency services with 1300 requests for help.

Plummeting temperatures brought unseasonal snowfalls to the Blue Mountains, southern highlands, tablelands and the cities of Orange, Bathurst and Canberra.

The howling westerlies forced the closure of all but one runway at Sydney Airport throwing schedules into chaos.

There was no one around for the early on Saturday morning. The unusually cold temperatures and the gusty westerlies kept everyone inside. Saturday morning in Sydney was feeling and looking like a freezing winter weekday. It was great – a real bonus at this time of the year.

By lunchtime fresh 4-5ft Sth swell lines were starting to show on the beaches. The combo of two swells delivered some neat random wedges if you were in the right spot at the right time, but the strong to almost gale force westerly was making take offs and positioning in the line up difficult at times.

The wind eased for the late and Sunday dawned sunny, clean and much warmer. The E swell was long gone, but the 4ft south lines were not to be ignored. Monday too was clean and fun ahead of a party wrecking southerly change that moved through Sydney early on Tuesday morning.

The sky was blue, the swell was up and the Sandshoes crew was on hand in numbers for the 2nd last comp of the year. Perfect Spring day!

Holman Spins a Winner
!
Matt Holman turned Shane Warne, pulling off a full spinner manoeuvre to clinch first place in the open final of the October pointscore, held in excellent waves.

Matty, with plenty of big gouging turns and full-tilt slashes, was already pushing frontrunners Matt Mulder and Jarrod Horner with three minutes of the 30 minute showdown to go.

But never one to take prisoners, the hulking naturalfooter boxed a big floater-360 combo to get the edge.

THE SEA LIFE WEBSITE LAUNCH
whatever & ever
19.10.2010

house parties rule! tea parties are pretty cool but the house party reigns numero uno. on a balmy friday evening the sea life headquarters played ground zero for the launching of its totally bangin’ new website. emails are so a few weeks ago, everyone needs a web address to call home. sea life hq was stripped of its furnishings with its white weatherboard walls mounted with many a frame of surfing nirvana. people shuffled between the gallery and the porch. it went something like this; grab a beer, sol with lime was very popular, make your way down the hallway, admire photographs, converse enthusiastically with gorgeous people, ponder the mood of the images in the gallery and how their rich hues made you feel, mingle your way back through the hallway then settle down on the porch out the front, repeat this process as necessary. indie surf poured from speakers that looked straight from the council clean up. psych/folk-rock lads big smoky squeezed their four pieces onto the porch and bathed the punters in the front yard with lush tremolo and warm harmonies. porching was rampant (porching is a fantastic pastime which requires nothing more from you than hanging out on a porch). the scene was perfect, so chilled, so house party, so surf. viva la sea life, whatever and ever, amen.

Report: 3rd Deus Surf Swap Meet

Picture
Tuesday, October 12, 2010 Report: The 3rd Deus Surf Swap Meet

Stefan's Wall of Death; where old and unwanted
surfboards come to find new life and love.
The 3rd Deus Surf Swap meet went down at the
Deus Ex Machina HQ on Parramatta Road, Camperdown in Sydney on Saturday 9th October. The Weather Channel had predicted light showers for the day, luckily for event organisers, conditions remained dry under foot - but with a flat, cool, overcast permeating for the entire day.

Organisers would have been happy with the eventual dry weather outcome, but there must be growing concern amongst the good folk at Deus that a few of the promoted industry icons that were billed to appear, were all last minute no-shows for the event. Leaving a little more bare concrete in the thinned-out display area than promised. I am not sure of the reasons behind the absenteeism.

As internally promoted and promoted on this site; there was no Alby Falzon and his Morning of the Earth merchandise. No Martin Worthington – celebrated air-brush artist of Hot Buttered fame. No Benny from Six Ounce at Bondi Junction. And several other collectors did not appear with their collections.

Tony the pin striper

Picture
Tony the pin striper details a board purchased from
the wall by an Irish tourist. 'The Clashmore Riders'
Retired surf film-maker David ‘The Mexican’ Sumpter did appear; ‘The Mex’ journeyed down from his home in Mullumbimby to vend his collectable surf and surf movie related items. I had to feel sorry for The Mex when one potential customer picked up a Morning Of The Earth DVD set and asked The Mex to sign it. The Mex responded politely with; “you don’t want my signature on there” and the befuddled customer replied; “why? you’re Alby Falzon aren’t you?”.

Despite the gloomy day that may well have contributed to keeping visitor numbers down, a steady and varied crowd trickled through at a consistent rate for most of the trading day. The crowd is an interesting mix of leather and thongs. Motorcycle and surf. Boulevard and Beach. Oil and sand.

On the positive side of the ledger;

Tony ‘Airspeed’ the amazing pin-striper from Goulburn was performing his astonishing, brush-painted, complex web of decorative fine strokes ‘by steady hand & eye’. In these days of computer aided design and vinyl cut graphics, I watched Tony performing his accurate pinline illustration work on skim boards, skateboards, bikes and on a surfboard.

Beautiful fins

Picture
Stefan's Wall of Death had some interesting boards up for sale and prices were quite fair and reasonable. I saw some boards on there for as low as $35 and $50.

I spotted a few celebs in the crowd. Most notable was HG Nelson of the HG and Roy radio and TV comedy duo fame. Their comedic style has been described as; "making the serious trivial and the trivial serious". Not sure if HG was there for the surf or cycles.

Surf Film supremo, Jack McCoy turned up and promptly threw up a couple of classic boards from his own personal collection onto the wall for display. A classic restored Gordon Merchant [Billabong founder] shaped board and another restored classic, a Gerry Lopez, ex- Bali, personal Lightning Bolt board. For devotees, Jack's new film 'A Deeper Shade of Blue' coming real soon. He promises.

I also chatted with Gary Crockett who is the curator charged with the responsibility of pulling together the Surf City exhibition. He was cruising around looking for ideas, inspirations and contacts. Surf City will be a collection of surf memorabilia and cultural items and will take an incredible, in-depth look at the evolving culture of surfing in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s in Sydney. Surf City will be on at the Museum of Sydney in September 2011. One to mark in the diary for sure.

Graeme from California Surf Imports had his beautiful Bing Surfboards on display, plus an awesome range of US made fins from the Rainbow Fin company, that he also imports and sells. Their new 'stained glass' fins are a dazzling artwork within themselves. Teal Nippard from Craft Surfboards was under his palm fond lined marquee [nice touch], displaying and working on his Alaia Paulownia timber boards.

Alaia boards

Picture
A few Cronulla locals were seen strolling the midway. Matthew ‘Cookie’ Cook just back from a month in Byron Bay and now making Surfboards under the El Capitan surfing boards label in Mangrove Lane Taren Point. Cronulla’s hot surfing brother duo; Terepai & Tainui Richmond also checking out the meet.

Cronulla Longboarder John Mingramm, grabbed a bagful of Deus clothing specials and 'Mingo' actually purchased an Alaia timber board from Teal Nippard and is taking it back to the golden beaches of The Shire to “give it a go”.

Word around the Meet suggested that Meet #3 didn't quite have the vibe and buzz of the preceeding Meets #1 and #2. It seems the challenge that now lies ahead is to keep up what appears to a flagging momentum for the 4th Deus Surf Swap Meet – which is ear-marked for March next year.

Original Deus conspirator; the Board Collector; aka Damion, is blowing town and taken up a new job as head of apparel at Dixon in Southern California this month. Damion's vacancy of Swap Meet 'Chief Cook & Bottle Washer' will be filled by Deus’ astute Uncle Keith, who will be left to steady the ship, maintain a true course and find the wind to fill the sails and move forward once again.

Holiday in Byron Bay

Picture
Tuesday the 5th of October 2010

After a couple of weeks of less than average waves, and not so groovy weather, it's cool to see the groms rewarded with some radical holiday hollow pits, in Byron Bay today. The rain was still bucketing down, but who cares when there's waves in town. The easterly swell continued to clean up its act, straighten itself out and turn on some pretty fun looking cylinders. And so there was much rejoicing from everyone as they continued to get themselves well locked in.

Southside Spring Classic
15 Sep, 2010

The Hurley Trestles comp is on now but with a lay day with a new swell coming, you can watch it on Fuel or off the ASP website.

It is all newschool air displays so if you want to see the future....speaking of air.

It was ironic watching the Spring Malibu statue classic on Saturday at the Alley, and whilst Dyl Hannah was popping aerial after aerial just out of the flagged area the commentator asked him to stop doing his tricks and move out of the way.

It was impressive to watch, I saw him do two 360's on one wave.....that's the future I guess, the past should move over and watch.

All the reports are saying its flat or 1-2 ft but they have it wrong with some nice 2-3ft set waves breaking on the beach breaks. The high tide and full moon may have accentuated it a little, but the conditions were perfect and all the early risers (and there weren't that many) got some nice waves before the Mal invasion occured.
Val Morgan was left in the wake of some dropping in fool at the Wall where there is a small bank, and the Tooth Fairy and friends were flossing up the beach at Midway. Greenhills is probably worth a walk as well cause I saw a couple of guys picking off some nice ones up at the Bend...probably looking for Gary Green's secret bank...Good luck!
The forecast for the rest of the week is pretty much flat with W/NW winds,a new 3-4ft South swell is due on Saturday and Sunday, so the weekend crew should be happy about that.
Kane Humphries was kind enough to lend me his  '67 Barry Bennett log. Here are few shots Danny Cook got of the the old mal.

Surf report with John Veage 18 Aug, 2010 09:56 AM

Another day another new swell, this time from the South with 4-5ft waves with some bigger ones around the bend. It's not as straight as yesterday's swell and there are waves all up and down the beaches and reefs. The wind is from the Sou-west but is supposed to go around to the NEast...so for those who know what that means Whoo hoo!! just wait for the low tide.

Today's pics were taken up and down the beach, there were peaks everywhere so you couldn't really lose out...it was hard to find surfers to shoot there were that many wave options. I did spot two independant Kneeboarders out at Midway, maybe they are making a comeback!

Today is the pick of the swell as it is due to drop to 2ft into the weekend when a new South swell is coming.

After Friday's big swell the beach has recovered pretty well and the banks could hold up into the new season. Today the water temp has dropped into the 15's (15.8) so don't be fooled by the longer warmer days.....good searching!

The biggest swell to bombard the NSW coastline so far this year!

August 13, 2010. Black Friday.

Just when most of us were starting to whinge about the lack of big swells this winter, along came Friday the thirteenth. So far though August has been nuts!

Surfers in Sydney and surrounds have been spoilt with back to back swells during the first three weeks of the month. That’s six separate swell sources so far in 18 days.

Last Friday’s hell swell forced crew into the garage to dust off the” 7 2” or to grab the jetski and tow board before charging the local bombie or reefbreak

Friday dawned offshore in the 4-6ft plus range and built rapidly to be 10ft plus and outta control by mid morning as the early WSW winds shifted Sth and strengthened..

There were some chunky waves ridden in Sydney and surrounds..

A FEMALE jogger went for an unexpected dip when a large wave swept her off her feet and threw her several metres down The Esplanade at North Cronulla on Friday morning. John Cooper, of Caringbah, said the woman was lucky she was not swept onto the rocks.

"She got swept across the path and held onto the railing,'' Mr Cooper said. ``It was pretty dangerous down there.''

He said the woman was shocked but escaped with cuts on her hand.

"I watched the wave come straight over her and she disappeared,'' Mr Gooch said.

Surf report with John Veage

A new pumping NE swell has replaced the SE one we have had over the last few days. The winds are NWest and very kind so use the perfect morning high tide to your advantage and pick one of the many good banks we have on offer. Using Gnash's birthday luck this morning we picked a new right bank that appeared overnight, but there a half a dozen to choose from up and down the beach. At low tide there are going to be some special lefts at "Rockies" so if you don't know where that is -unlucky! This is a golden week for swell with a new 6-8ft South swell due on Friday, hit it early before the big Southerly hits. Going into the weekend there will still be some waves, so happy days. Today's pics were taken at the Midway left, and the new right bank. There weren't many starters early which was pretty special for the lucky ones so some of the frothers missed out.

Some fun peaks getting into the southern reefs of Cronulla today. Decided the waves were good enough for the old PT Tubeshooter. Here are some photos of the classic single fin turning of the bottom.

Saturday the 9th of August

The August pointscore contest was held on a picture perfect winter's Saturday. The competition and camaraderie that Shoes is legendary for were a fitting tribute to the passing earlier in the week of the Mayor of Sandshoes, Frank Latta.

Vale a Giant of Sandshoes

August 9, 2010

by sid

Frank Latta, acknowledged as the “Mayor of Sandshoes” in the 1960s and 70s– has sadly died doing what he loved – riding waves.

Frank, one of Australia’s most naturally gifted wave-riders and a leading board shaper during both the long board and early short board eras, had a heart attack while surfing at Nambucca Heads.

He was such a great surfer that he comfortably straddled the changing eras of surfboards – from 10fts to short boards…a valediction of his talent; and no mean feat.

Frank finished fourth in the inaugural Bobby Brown Memorial Championship in 1968, held at his beloved Shoes, but came back stronger to win in 1969 on Cronulla Beach.

In winning he cranked out a series of delicate nose rides that had the local crowd hooting…one of those rides scored a perfect 10!

Latta was a classic laconic Aussie…only made a comment when he needed to…during the 60s-70s he was so popular and admired for his surfing that many believed he could “walk on water.”

He was definitely the Sutherland Shire’s first local superstar of the waves.

The cover of the second edition of the surfing nostalgia book Switch-Foot, published this year, carries a classic portrayal of his surfing style and prowess – a perfect crouched stretch five nose ride.

He would have shaped thousands of boards in his time in the thick of the industry, in the 60s, 70s and 80s and 90s.

Frank’s memory lives on at Shoes.

Surf report with John Veage

wednesday the 21st of july '10

The day started with a nice offshore south westerly and 3ft of southerly swell, with a couple of banks at the Alley and Elouera-Midway looking promising on the outgoing tide. Then right on 7am, a slight southerly graced us with its presence, than BAM... round Jibbon came the real blow, reducing the surf instantly to absolute rubbish(worse than normal rubbish)

The temperature didn't help at 9 degrees and dropping ,with everybody fleeing the beach, work was the better option!

It does look promising though with a gradual swell increase to 4-5ft on the Saturday and the winds going to the south west on Thursday, Friday then tending to the south east on the weekend.

Today's pics are what I could get as the southerly hit.

Surf report with John Veage 14 Jul, 2010 11:24 AM

A nice super clean E/NE swell snuck in under the cover of darkness (and it was dark) forcing surfers to run home and change boards. The low tide didn't help the beaches but as the tide came in and the wind held off a little, conditions were near perfect! The southern corners are the go with that secret spot near Treachery pretty good but a little inconsistent with the mix of two swells and long waits between sets....it was frustrating watching guys miss a handfull of wider good ones whilst the pack hassled for ones of little consequence.

I was run over this morning by a flying baked bean who only had 20 metres warning, it was a good wave and I am glad there were no pointy ends on the surfboard, if you have seen the pics of Joel Parko's foot(or Macca's head) that has him missing this year's JBay and subsequent world title race you will know what the result could be,very messy.

The banks are still pretty good on the high tide so get out there now before the so called howling Westerly turns up and turns it to offshore chop.

Today's pics were taken at "Gumboots" a semi secret reef break near the Frothers house, he is in one of the pics trying to bend his aching 50 year old frame into a cranky two footer!

It was good to see Fishkiller finally dethroned as the surf report cover boy after a 2 week hogging, causing complaints for a wider cross section of talent...it is hard though when you only shoot at 7.30am for 15 minutes.

This E/NE swell is due to turn on Thursday into a new South swell which will peak on Sat (3-4ft) with the winds offshore all week.

Good hunting and don't forget to hang your wetsuits out!

‘Ocean Rhythms’
screened to a packed and stoked audience at the El Sol Mexican Restaurant in Cronulla on Sunday May 16th. Apart from local surf celebrities one stoked audience member was local surfer & musician Brad Heald – the bass guitarist from alternative rock band ‘The Vines’.

Brad and I had a great chat about ‘Ocean Rhythms’ and he told me he really loved the film and offered me his congratulations on making such a great film that reflects the surfing & music of the times.

The Vines appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone in October 2002 (the first Australian band to do so since Men at Work in 1983) with the words “Rock is Back: meet the Vines” boldly emblazoned underneath. They also won an ARIA Award the same year. The Vines have also played as the music act on US television’s top rated ‘The David Letterman Show’.
